(CLO) Two police officers were injured, one of them seriously, after an explosion occurred Thursday night outside a police building in Berlin.
Authorities in the German capital said police were on a routine security patrol when an unidentified object exploded near a fence.
"Tonight, at around 8:20 p.m., a serious security incident occurred at the fence surrounding" a police building in the Wittenau district, Berlin police posted on the social media platform X.

One officer suffered injuries to his face and eye, while the other suffered “acoustic trauma”. Both received medical treatment.
The explosion comes after 30 German police officers were injured in thousands of incidents on New Year's Eve 2025, including one seriously injured by illegally manufactured fireworks.
A series of different attacks, including fireworks, occurred during New Year's Eve. According to the authorities, at least five people were killed and dozens of rescue workers were injured when a series of fireworks-related incidents marred New Year's Eve celebrations in Germany.
In the capital Berlin, firefighters responded to 1,892 incidents on New Year's Eve - 294 more than the previous year, according to a statement from the city's fire department. The statement said there were at least 13 reported attacks on rescue workers.
According to Berlin police spokesman Florian Nath, 330 people were arrested in the capital on New Year's Eve. One police officer was seriously injured after "possibly being hit by illegal fireworks" and is undergoing surgery in hospital.
