Lack of quality accommodation - A big challenge for Hoi An tourism

A peaceful, ancient, poetic Hoi An ancient town; a cultural space, agricultural ecology, craft villages with unique traditional identities; a flooded ecological space of coastal estuaries with special-use forests, coral reefs, biosphere reserves, long and beautiful coastlines...; These are special advantages that help Hoi An position itself to become a major tourist center of the Central region in particular and the whole country in general.

Not only attracting domestic tourists, in recent years, Hoi An has become an ideal destination for international tourists from both Europe and Asia. Statistics show that since 2019, the total number of tourists to Hoi An has reached nearly 8 million, of which international visitors are estimated at over 4.7 million.

In the first half of 2022 alone, Hoi An welcomed 10,000 visitors per day, surpassing Da Nang, Nha Trang... to become the destination welcoming the most international visitors in the country. In the first 6 months of 2024, according to statistics from the Quang Nam Tourism Industry, the number of international visitors to Quang Nam reached nearly 3.1 million, and in Hoi An alone, the number of international visitors continued to grow quite strongly.

Compared to many other famous destinations in the country, Hoi An is clearly superior in the number of tourists, especially international tourists thanks to its own attraction. However, the challenge of Hoi An is that tourists flock to Hoi An but the number of stays and spending does not increase much. The regrettable thing and the biggest concern for the locality is that visitors come to Hoi An for sightseeing, then return to Da Nang to relax and eat because Hoi An is lacking and scarce in resorts and accommodations of the right standard.

The challenge of Hoi An tourism is the lack of quality accommodation facilities.

By the end of 2022, Hoi An City had nearly 850 accommodation establishments with nearly 12,500 rooms. By 2024, statistics for the entire Quang Nam province showed that the number of accommodation establishments had not yet exceeded 1,000, of which only 14 establishments met 5-star standards; establishments reaching 3-4 stars also accounted for a small proportion. It can be seen that the growth of accommodation establishments is inversely proportional to the growth of tourists in Hoi An.

This becomes even more challenging when international visitors to Hoi An are high-spending and long-stay visitors, requiring high-end accommodation to meet their needs for enjoyment and experience. Lack of international-class accommodation means that Hoi An is losing the opportunity to grow from the tourism industry, leading to the paradox that tourists are attracted in large numbers but revenue is not much. During the peak tourist season, there is even a situation of local overload, which invisibly creates a negative impact on the attractiveness of Hoi An.

Hoi An is orienting to expand and improve the quality of accommodation and tourism services to attract high-spending, long-term, and repeat visitors. The good news is that in recent years, in Hoi An, a number of large real estate enterprises have participated in investing and developing large-scale projects in the form of international-class resort complexes to best meet the needs of tourists. When put into operation, these accommodation products will contribute to resolving the paradox of the lack of luxury accommodation in Hoi An.

From an investment perspective, the above challenges of Hoi An tourism industry are opening up effective business opportunities for investors, if they own high-quality accommodation products.
