The night economy includes service activities that take place after 6:00 p.m. the previous night until 6:00 a.m. the following morning, including: Shopping at night markets, 24-hour convenience stores, cuisine, art, music, entertainment programs, festivals, events, and tourist attractions that are only open at night.

In Vietnam, the Prime Minister has signed Decision No. 1129/QD-TTg approving the "Project on night-time economic development in Vietnam" with the goal of exploiting the potential for night-time economic development to maximize new economic development opportunities, improve income and living standards of the people. And Hanoi - the capital of a thousand years of culture - has been and is a locality that has successfully built night tourism products.

Night tourism - Unique features of Hanoi

In recent times, Hanoi has implemented many cultural and tourism activities at night such as: Organizing walking streets - night markets on weekends in Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Tay Ho districts; allowing some bars and restaurants in the Old Quarter to open until 2am...

Some businesses combine with destinations to organize night tours at Hoa Lo Prison Relics, Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Hanoi Literature Museum...

In early 2024, the Hanoi Department of Tourism also approved a plan to build and develop a number of additional night tourism products associated with destinations such as: Tay Ho night flower market, Quang Phu Cau incense village... Night tour products have brought many experiences to tourists, creating a unique feature of Hanoi tourism.

Hoan Kiem is the leading district in developing the night economy through tourism products.

Specifically: through the implementation of tasks and solutions to effectively promote the value of heritages, cultural spaces, develop the night-time economy, and develop tourism in the district, the number of overnight visitors in Hoan Kiem district has increased rapidly. In 2021, it was 625.6 thousand visitors, in 2022, it was over 996 thousand visitors, and in 2023, it is estimated to be 1.6 million visitors, including 1.5 million international visitors.

Revenue from the accommodation and food industry in Hoan Kiem in 2021 was VND1,571 billion; in 2022 it was VND3,122 billion; estimated in 2023 it was about VND6,012 billion. Revenue from the tourism industry increased from VND189 billion in 2021 to VND896 billion in 2022 and in 2023 it is estimated to reach VND3,975 billion.

Ms. Dang Huong Giang, Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism, said that developing the night-time economy is one of the key activities that Hanoi pays special attention to and has directed the development of this type of economy to become an indispensable part of economic and social development.

"The festivals and major cultural events organized not only open up the development of the night-time economy, promote the cultural industry of the capital, but also affirm the brand of Hanoi as a friendly destination," Ms. Dang Huong Giang emphasized.

According to Ms. Giang, Hanoi has space for developing the night economy, concentrated in districts such as Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Tay Ho. In addition, travel businesses, tourist destinations, especially relic and heritage destinations, have built a number of night tourism and experiential tourism products on the basis of exploiting traditional values.

Night art performance models are also focused on development such as Hanoi Cheo Theater, Hanoi Cai Luong Theater; Thang Long Puppet Theater...

Not only that, the capital of Vietnam has a strong culinary background, comparable to major cities in Thailand. This is also a big plus for Hanoi to develop its night-time economy.

To keep Hanoi's night economy "lit up"

On May 24, the Politburo issued Conclusion No. 80-KL/TU on the Hanoi Capital Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, requiring Hanoi to "research and develop specific night-time economic models for each region, building Hanoi into a safe, vibrant, attractive, unique destination with a night-time economic brand, meeting the needs of people and tourists, with higher competitiveness than other domestic and international destinations".

Some cultural experts believe that this conclusion shows unity in policy, is a "compass" for the policy-making process, and moves towards specific implementation steps to develop the night-time economy in accordance with the conditions, characteristics, and unique resources of the capital Hanoi.

Not only that, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has also issued a Project on Some Models for Developing Night Tourism Products, with the goal of increasing tourist attraction, increasing spending and extending the length of stay of domestic and international tourists; contributing to making night tourism a key product to develop the night economy in Vietnam.

The project aims to strive for the following provinces and cities by 2025: Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Da Lat (Lam Dong), Can Tho, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau to have at least one model for developing night tourism products. Particularly, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City will form separate night entertainment complexes; increase the average length of stay of tourists in the project implementation areas by at least one year.

Experts say the above project is the basis for Hanoi to build its own unique products.

In the future, to make Hanoi's night economy "light up", Director of the Vietnam Institute for Tourism Development Research Nguyen Anh Tuan suggested that planning should be considered one of the prerequisites in line with policies for this type of economy.

Mr. Tuan suggested: "The planning solution here is to build a new economic model for the area, assess the potential of night tourism economy and identify investment resources in the most systematic and effective way, but still in harmony with other economic types, minimizing all impacts on people in the area.

Hanoi can study the expansion of night tourism products such as developing tourism services on both sides of the Red River; planning for the construction of modern shopping centers near the central area, such as building an underground shopping center at Thong Nhat Park.

With the above positive activities, we believe that the night-time economy will develop sustainably, making an important contribution to economic growth, exploiting the potential of tourism and service activities, promoting Hanoi's culture and cuisine to people across the country and the world.
