In addition, Lao Bao International Border Gate has the most vibrant trade activities in the Central region, with import and export turnover increasing every year. In 2024, the total number of passengers entering and exiting the border will reach 609,178, an increase of 18.59% compared to 2023; the number of import and export declarations will reach 10,588, an increase of 28.15%, the import and export turnover will reach 645.77 million USD, an increase of 45.87%; the weight of imported and exported goods through this border gate will reach 1.18 million tons, an increase of 53.63%; the number of vehicles entering and exiting the border will reach 230,683, an increase of 11.8%; on average, there will be about 620 vehicles entering and exiting the border gate every day; the number of transit declarations will reach 24,780, an increase of 24.25%; Total value of transit goods reached 8.93 billion USD, up 12.2%.
In particular, the Lao Bao - Densavanh Cross-Border Economic and Trade Zone project is an important economic project between Vietnam and Laos that is being negotiated by the two governments. In addition, the Lao Bao International Border Gate area has 1,238 individual business households and 245 business households in Laos; the annual commercial and service production value is up to thousands of billions of VND.
Key projects in border areas
VSICO Quang Tri Dry Port Project is a key project, included in the planning for the development of the dry port system in the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050. The project has a land use area of 85,782 m2 , a total investment of 236 billion VND; cargo clearance capacity of 3.5 million tons/year, of which container cargo output is 100,000 TEU/year; bulk cargo output is 1,000,000 tons/year; capacity of 250,000 tons of cargo; annual revenue is estimated at 200 billion VND, contributing to the state budget about 25 billion VND.
The project will provide important services such as cargo handling, warehousing, transportation support and customs clearance. This is the first dry port in the Lao Bao International Border Gate area - one of the important international border gates of the East-West Economic Corridor, directly connecting Vietnam with ASEAN countries.
VSICO Maritime Joint Stock Company General Director Nguyen Thi Van Ha said that VSICO Quang Tri Dry Port will act as a strategic logistics center, helping to reduce pressure on seaports, save transportation costs and shorten customs clearance time. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in the first quarter of 2026, creating more development momentum for the Lao Bao border gate economic zone and neighboring areas.
In addition, the project also promotes regional economic and cooperation. The project not only facilitates import and export activities but also contributes to attracting investment, expanding markets and developing transport infrastructure in border areas. When put into operation, this dry port will contribute significantly to improving the competitiveness of Quang Tri province in particular and Vietnam in general on the regional logistics map.
The project also promises to create hundreds of new jobs, increase workers’ incomes and develop an ecosystem of logistics service businesses. At the same time, the dry port will help reduce pressure on roads, facilitating the faster and more efficient movement of goods.

Realizing the Lao Bao - Densavanh Cross-Border Economic - Trade Zone
The groundbreaking of VSICO Quang Tri Dry Port at Lao Bao International Border Gate creates an advantage to anticipate and promote the formation of the Lao Bao - Densavanh Cross-Border Economic - Trade Zone. This is an important economic project between the governments of Vietnam and Laos. This project aims to create a new dynamic economic zone for both countries, strengthen economic cooperation and promote the development of the border area, creating conditions for the development of Quang Tri's economic, trade and industrial sectors.
The Lao Bao - Densavanh Cross-Border Economic and Trade Zone is expected to be built in the border area between Vietnam and Laos, at the Lao Bao - Densavanh border gate pair. The total area of the economic zone is expected to be 3,224 hectares, of which 1,724 hectares are in Quang Tri and 1,500 hectares are in Savannakhet province (Laos). The project's goal is to create a modern, multi-sector and multi-sector economic zone with synchronous technical and social infrastructure. The economic zone will have industrial parks, export processing zones, duty-free zones, tourist attractions and other service sectors.
This project will be implemented in three phases. Phase 1 (2024 - 2025) will carry out the work of requesting the negotiation policy from the Government and the two sides will negotiate and approve the Agreement on the construction of the Lao Bao - Densavanh Cross-Border Economic - Trade Zone; Phase 2 (2026 - 2030) will focus on attracting investment, developing infrastructure, perfecting common incentive mechanisms and policies; Phase 3 (after 2030) will comprehensively promote cooperation contents.
