Flexible, diverse training courses for journalists

In the development of modern journalism, the public's need to read, watch and access has changed, which increasingly requires higher training in journalism. Faced with challenges and big questions in improving the quality of courses, the Center for Journalism Training (TTBDNVBC) has actively and proactively implemented a series of innovative and creative solutions to improve the quality and effectiveness of training for each group of members.

Journalism career path is constantly changing to meet practical requirements.

Journalist Hoang Ngoc Sy - Permanent Vice President of Quang Tri Provincial Journalists Association spoke at the seminar "Training and fostering journalism skills according to current needs".

In particular, always focusing on the application of information technology in training and fostering activities to keep up with digital transformation, in 2023, the Center will still maintain the combination of direct and online teaching methods and have many contents that keep up with and integrate with the innovation trend of modern journalism. Whether in-person or online, the classes organized by the Center are carefully prepared from the stage of coming up with topics, preparing content, inviting lecturers and students to suit the topic of each class.

In fact, it can be said that 2023 is the year when the Center will face difficulties in disbursing the state budget for training, requiring the Center to make great efforts to overcome difficulties, be flexible and proactive in organizing classes by maintaining classes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (where the Center has available facilities to save on expenses).

In addition, the Center continues to strengthen coordination with foreign organizations and local Journalists Associations, businesses, and agencies under ministries, departments, and branches to maintain practical and effective training classes. As of the end of November 2023, the Center has organized 76 activities for nearly 2,800 Journalists Association members nationwide.

It is expected that by the end of 2023, the Center will organize 96 activities for nearly 4,000 members. Not only the number of classes and students is maintained, the quality of the content of the classes is also always of concern with the goal of being practical and originating from real needs. Therefore, the Center has innovated and improved the quality of this work in the direction of focused and key training to update knowledge, methods, and specialized and appropriate skills.

New classes have been organized to keep up with changing trends in world journalism such as: organizing specialized classes on digital transformation; data journalism, applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in operations; producing journalistic works on social networking platforms; instructing members on multimedia journalism, converged newsrooms, digitization and data mining for journalists, podcast production, SEO skills for electronic newspapers; exploiting information in the digital age; producing quality journalistic works on Party building... In addition, the Center has also promoted international cooperation, which helps members access new knowledge and learning methods, and a lot of new knowledge.

Towards organizing paid classes

Always wishing to improve the quality of teaching and learning, the Center clearly identifies the important role of lecturers and pedagogical skills in the training and development of lecturers. The lecture program prepared by lecturers always emphasizes practical knowledge, all of which are selected to build the training program. The courses integrate political content and journalistic ethics into the lectures to help journalists always maintain professional ethics during their work.

In this regard, the Center has proactively developed a training schedule and training content early so that members and all levels of the Association can easily follow and register to participate. Maintain coordination with local Journalists Associations to develop plans, prepare, arrange, and organize training and development. In particular, in 2023, the Center has developed and implemented many quality courses on lecturer training.

In particular, 2 courses were organized: "Training lecturer skills" and " Developing teaching skills for journalism lecturers" for 19 journalists working at press agencies in Ho Chi Minh City, to consolidate and supplement lecturers - young journalists, skilled and knowledgeable about technology, working at press agencies to become lecturers for the Center.

Appreciating the contributions of all levels of the Association and journalist members to the activities of the Center, in 2023, the unit organized a workshop on "Training and fostering journalism skills according to current needs" . This workshop attracted the participation of 60 journalists, leaders of press agencies and part-time lecturers of the Center. Through the workshop, the Center noted issues related to training and fostering programs to meet the trend of digital transformation.

Many delegates said that in order to change old habits, it is necessary to train a workforce capable of proficiently using digital tools and developing creativity... This has been of great concern to the Center's leaders as well as leaders of local Journalists Associations at all levels, and they have set goals for the following years.

In recent times, the Provincial Journalists Association has always closely coordinated with the Center, online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic and in-person classes have been maintained. Before each class, the two sides have discussed thoroughly about good topics suitable for each subject at each press and media agency…”

Continuing to innovate content and enhance training in the coming time is one of the goals. Journalist Nguyen Thi Hai Van - Director of the Center for Journalism Training of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that in 2024, the Center plans to open training courses for journalists working at press agencies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to help the Center have more quality lecturers and expand the network of lecturers for the Center in various types of journalism.

“In the coming years, the Center will focus on making the website content always attractive, updating information about classes to attract more visitors. Based on the conditions of equipment and teaching staff that the Center has, we will also promote the organization of paid classes at the request of the Association at all levels, press agencies, organizations and businesses that need to do communication work, in order to build the sustainable development of the Center, gradually contributing to the Association's budget" - journalist Nguyen Thi Hai Van shared.
