Trump - Harris 'war of words' heats up near US election day

At The Garden Arena in New York City, Republican candidate Donald Trump called Democratic candidate Kamala Harris "a disaster who destroyed everything in her path." Trump's allies also accused Harris of starting her career as a prostitute.

The arguments in the election campaign were fierce and American voters need to weigh two different visions of leadership and the future of America before heading to the polls on November 5.

Vice President Harris chose a location near the White House for her final campaign rally. In front of a large crowd of Americans, Harris emphasized the seriousness and threat posed by Mr. Trump. It is known that this location is also where Mr. Trump spoke on January 6, 2021 to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election with the victory of Mr. Joe Biden.

In her speech, Ms. Harris also emphasized her opponent's view of prioritizing personal interests over national interests.

Donald Trump has spent a decade dividing Americans and keeping them afraid of each other. That’s who he is. I pledge to be a president for all Americans, always putting country before party and before myself,” Harris said.

Senior adviser Jen O'Malley Dillon noted that Vice President Harris' final speech was aimed at undecided voters, many of whom are moderate Republicans.

We know there are still a lot of voters who are undecided about who they support or whether they should vote. This race is extremely close, we talk about it as a margin of error race. We know it will be close in the coming days,” said adviser O’Malley Dillon.

Mr. Trump's team focuses on reaching out to infrequent voters or those who are frustrated with the direction of the country and want change.

But former President Trump has framed his comments in recent days by asking whether people are better off now than they were four years ago when he left office. When Trump left office, polls showed that most voters were dissatisfied with the direction of the country.

Notably, the Republican candidate announced the largest deportation campaign in US history and imposed widespread tariffs to generate revenue and boost domestic production.

Mr Trump also praised the New York rally as a "festival of love" and did not criticize comedian Tony Hinchcliffe for making racist remarks at the event. Other speakers at the event also made racist remarks aimed at Latinos, people of color, Jews, Palestinians and sexually insulting Democratic opponents, causing Mr Trump's allies to worry about negative repercussions in some important battleground states.

On October 29, the former US President also gave an assessment of Vice President Harris' leadership ability. Mr. Trump said that Ms. Harris had "obliterated" national borders, "undermined the middle class ", brought "blood and filth" to big cities as well as "caused war and chaos all over the world".

Trump senior adviser Jason Miller said he had outlined a plan to repair the economy, secure the southern border and “improve people’s lives every day.” “Kamala Harris hasn’t done any of that,” Miller said.

In her later campaigns, Ms. Harris gradually moved away from the “fun” conversational style that defined her entry into the presidential race. The US vice president pledged solidarity with the people in her final campaign.

“Mr. Trump is unstable, obsessed with revenge, constantly resentful and wants his power unchecked. This is not a presidential candidate who thinks about how to make your life better,” the Democratic candidate said.

Harris will sometimes speak directly to Republican voters and promises to listen to those who did not vote for her if elected. Vice President Harris has previously said she would bring Republicans into her cabinet.

“Unlike Mr. Trump, I do not believe that people who disagree with me are enemies. He wants to put them in jail, I will give them a seat at the table,” Ms. Harris declared.

Ahead of her speech on October 29, the Democratic campaign faced criticism from the party’s far left that Ms. Harris was too focused on courting moderate Republican voters, urging their candidate to focus more on the working class rather than the threat Mr. Trump poses to American democracy.

At the end of her speech, Ms Harris warned that Mr Trump was threatening democratic norms and pledged to take action against rising food prices and help first-time home buyers with down payments.

“Walking and chewing gum at the same time. That means they can hear the debate about freedom and things that affect their pocketbooks. I think she certainly has the ability to address both of those issues at the same time,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
