On November 11, Mr. Pham Van Dong (30 years old, residing in Ha Tien City, Kien Giang) said that he had sent a report about the fishing boat and 12 fishermen being attacked while operating in Ca Mau waters to the authorities as well as the Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province.

Attacked for fishing grounds?

Mr. Dong stated that at around 1:45 a.m. on November 8, his fishing boat KG-94839-TS (trawling) and 2 other fishing boats (KG-92790-TS and KG-62299-TS) with a total of 12 fishermen were operating in the waters of Ca Mau province when suddenly 2 composite hull vehicles and 1 squid trap boat (snail shells tied into a chain and dropped into the sea to trap squid - PV) approached. Afterwards, the people on the 3 vehicles threw petrol bombs and used homemade guns to shoot at the people on the 3 fishing boats.

"About 10 minutes later, the two boats and the squid trap boat left. At this time, the fishermen were busy putting out the fire caused by the petrol bombs and giving first aid to the injured. Because it was dark and they were panicking, the fishermen could not identify their attackers," said Mr. Dong.

The attack left fisherman NVM (30 years old, living in Ha Tien, Kien Giang) shot in the leg; fisherman LTV (45 years old, living in Phu Quoc City) with a bullet through his calf. And fisherman D.V.D (51 years old, living in Ha Tien City) was shot in the face.

Mr. Dong said that if the people on the three fishing boats do not handle the situation promptly, the consequences will be unpredictable. "The incident has caused panic among the fishermen. Now they are going out to sea with anxiety, not knowing when they will be attacked," Mr. Dong worried.

Regarding the reason for the attack, Mr. Dong also said: "Many times our fishing boats have been threatened, attacked, and had rocks and shells thrown at them, but this time their attack was too fierce. Their purpose is to not allow us to exploit in that sea area, so that they can sell the fishing grounds. They also said that it was their sea area, prohibiting us from entering to exploit."

Mr. Dong also confirmed that the story of selling fishing grounds is true and has been happening for a long time in Ca Mau waters.

Directing authorities to investigate thoroughly

Regarding this incident, on November 11, Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai, Secretary of the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee, said that immediately after receiving the information, he directed the provincial Border Guard to investigate and verify. "The Ca Mau Border Guard is coordinating with the Kien Giang Border Guard and other forces to investigate the incident and has had initial results," Mr. Hai said.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai also informed that he has directed the authorities of Ca Mau province to urgently verify and investigate the incident so that fishermen can feel secure at sea. At the same time, he will strictly handle violations of the law.

On the same afternoon, Mr. Dong said that fisherman LTV had surgery to remove the bullet from his leg and is being treated at the Ha Tien City Medical Center. The other two fishermen NVM and D.V.D were transferred to Kien Giang General Hospital and also had the bullet removed from their bodies. Currently, the health of the three fishermen is stable and they are recovering.
