Many parents of Nguyen Chanh Secondary School (Quang Ngai) believe that the school health check-up for students is a formality. It is impossible to examine 960 students in 450 minutes (less than 30 seconds/student).

On November 18, more parents reported that the school health check-up for students at Nguyen Chanh Secondary School (Tinh Ha Commune, Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai) took place very quickly (less than 30 seconds/student).
30-second health check-up per student, only a miracle doctor can keep up
According to the announcement of health check-ups at the beginning of the school year, all 30 classes (960 students) of Nguyen Chanh Secondary School will be examined on October 13.
Morning examination starts at 7:30 and ends at 11:30; afternoon examination starts at 13:30 and ends at 17:00.
Total examination time is 450 minutes/960 students. Classes go to Tinh Ha Commune Health Station (Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai) according to separate time frames. Regardless of the number of students, each class has 15 minutes for examination.
A parent said that on the afternoon of October 12, her child asked her mother to take her for a health check-up the next morning. On the morning of October 13, the mother and child did not eat or drink anything to ensure accurate results.
"I thought the examination was to detect my child's illness so I prepared very carefully. But it turned out to be a waste of time and no examination at all," said this parent.
Similarly, another parent who brought her child to the clinic confirmed: "My child was weighed and measured for height and that was it. The same goes for other children, it only takes about 5 seconds to weigh, measure and then go home. No bone, heart, eye, or tooth examination."
The incident became a big deal when someone posted it on social media. Many parents asked their children about the incident and confirmed that the first-year health check-up at Nguyen Chanh Secondary School only measured weight and height. Some children were asked about their eyesight and heart by doctors.
With a 30-second examination per student, many social media users say that only "miracle doctors" can do it. Because reading the name and going to the examination table takes tens of seconds, not to mention measuring blood pressure, heart rate, checking eyes, teeth and jaws...
What does the school say?
School health check-ups are implemented according to joint circular 13/2016 of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training, to assess the health status of students of many ages.
According to the above circular, students of Nguyen Chanh Secondary School between the ages of 6-18 are required to have their physical indicators measured (height, weight, BMI); blood pressure, vision, dental, ear, nose, throat, bone and joint examinations...
This is mandatory in all schools nationwide, to monitor vision, scoliosis, dental disease, mental health disorders... to coordinate with parents to have appropriate treatment.
In addition, based on the examination results, the school applies a learning and training regimen appropriate to each student's condition.
Mr. Lu Dinh Bao - Principal of Nguyen Chanh Secondary School - confirmed that parents' complaints about the health check-up at the beginning of the year being too quick were correct. The school will discuss this in the near future and hopes parents will understand.
According to Mr. Bao, at the beginning of the school year, the industry database requires students to enter information about their height, weight, eyesight, etc. Because of the time crunch, the students study from Monday to Saturday, with only Sunday free, so the examination was scheduled for October 13 at Tinh Ha Commune Health Station. That day, the station arranged 7 staff to examine them.
However, he said the examination only measures height, weight, and asks students if their eyes are okay or if their heart is tired. From there, basic information is entered into the data. But to examine accurately and diagnose the disease is too difficult.
"It's definitely wrong. Looking at the examination time, it's too quick. Parents are right to say it's time-consuming and hasty. This is also a lesson for the school to arrange time and organize better examinations in the future," said Mr. Bao.
