Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan, Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies, Hanoi University, said that Tet is not simply a normal traditional ritual.

The traditional Vietnamese New Year carries moral values, inspiring a bright future in the new year in both study and life. Therefore, the custom of writing the first words of the new year is a beautiful cultural feature, preserved by many Vietnamese people every year.

According to Ms. Xuan, it is very difficult to write what to bring luck at the beginning of the new year, because each person will have their own wishes that need to be written at the beginning of the year, containing their wishes with all sincerity.

"For example, some families want to have more children, some families want to do business well to build more houses, some people want to get married next year or study well, pass exams..., all are chosen to start writing at the beginning of spring.

I think that when each person starts writing, they will put their faith, expectations and wishes for a good new year for themselves or their loved ones that year.

For example, during the Covid year, I wished for the pandemic to pass quickly, so I wrote that at the beginning of the year... In general, the things I most wanted were all handwritten on the first day of spring," said Dr. Thanh Xuan.

Regarding the question that many people now write the first words of the year on computers, this expert said that there is an old saying that "handwriting reflects a person's character", when people write by hand, they often find it more meaningful.

As an educator in the field of culture, Dr. Kim Xuan said she often writes by hand at the beginning of the year.

"Currently, many people choose the day to start writing at the beginning of the year to bring good luck, that is a belief. I don't know how true or false this is, but I think, deep down, many people believe it is correct," said Dr. Thanh Xuan.

Nowadays, although not many, there are some people who start writing according to the trend without understanding its deep meaning. When I asked why young people asked for calligraphy, they answered because the writing was beautiful without knowing the meaning of the word.

Although calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing, each stroke contains a philosophy of life that people must understand to be effective for themselves, not just because it is beautiful.

According to this expert, the first writing of the year is also the beginning of spring. People believe that those strokes bring peace and prosperity, meaning that the best things that people desire, they all entrust and entrust in the strokes they write, ask for and give on the first day of the year.
