"I'm so happy!"
That was the feeling of Ms. Ly Thi Kim Nhu (67 years old), the owner of the famous Co Nhu beef noodle shop in Ho Chi Minh City, when her restaurant was named by Michelin for the first time in the Michelin Selected category (restaurant recommended by Michelin). This is also the only Hue beef noodle shop in Ho Chi Minh City in this category.
Customers packed Mrs. Nhu's family's beef noodle shop at noon.
One day after the Michelin Guide honoring event held in Ho Chi Minh City, we went to Mrs. Nhu's beef noodle shop at noon, when the shop had just opened to welcome customers and were surprised to see a lot of customers coming to the shop. Mrs. Nhu enthusiastically guided customers to park and enter the shop.
If you are coming here for the first time, it is not easy to find this restaurant as it is located in a deep alley at 274 Vo Van Tan (District 3). However, just go to number 38, alley 287 Nguyen Dinh Chieu street, there will be a sign and the owner will be there to welcome you.
"I had some family business, so I closed the restaurant for 4 days. It just reopened, so it was crowded, the tables were full, so customers had to wait a bit, but not long. Plus, the restaurant was just honored by Michelin, so there were also new customers. Many Western customers came to the restaurant in the morning, I wasn't selling yet, so I had to make an appointment for them to come back at 11am, even though I'm not very good at English," the owner said with a bright, friendly smile.
Opened since 1995
Mrs. Nhu happily said that last night, her son-in-law had just come to the Michelin event to be honored in the Michelin Selected category. Having this honor, she and her family had no other emotions than surprise and happiness. She also could not know when the Michelin Guide appraisers came to the restaurant and gave their evaluation.
According to Mrs. Nhu, she opened this beef noodle shop here in 1995, from the recipe passed down by her sister-in-law. At that time, each bowl of beef noodle soup she sold cost about 3,000 - 4,000 VND and was just a small sidewalk noodle shop. Later, she moved the premises into her house, deeper into the alley.
In recent years, the owner "retired" and passed the restaurant on to her daughter and son-in-law. She happily watched her children do business and help them with the "outside" tasks. "When I was selling, the restaurant was crowded. The secret is in the broth.
Each portion of beef noodle soup costs 40,000 VND.
Later, when passing it on to their children, they came up with the idea of adding floating fat to the beef noodle soup. Introduced by a famous beauty queen, the restaurant became more known for its floating fat beef noodle soup and has been crowded ever since," Ms. Nhu recounted.
Love Ms. Nhu's beef noodle soup
Michelin Guide describes Bun Bo Hue at Co Nhu's restaurant: This family-run restaurant is tucked away in a small alley. It takes a little effort to find, but you'll be rewarded with delicious beef pho.
First-timers can try the Bun Bo Thap Cam (full) which is a great way to sample different cuts of beef, bringing out the rich flavours of the meat. The rich sweet broth is made from beef meat and bones, along with herbs like lemongrass. Add a dash of chilli sauce for extra flavour.
Mr. Luu The Duy (28 years old), working in District 3, said that almost every week he and his colleagues visit Ms. Nhu's floating beef noodle shop to eat and have become regular customers. He learned about the shop from a clip on social media about 3 years ago, came here to eat and immediately liked the taste.
The restaurant is famous for its beef noodle soup with floating fat.
The customer said he liked the fat floating in the beef noodle bowl the most, it was fatty, fragrant, and had a rich, flavorful broth. This was one of Mr. Duy's favorite beef noodle shops in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, each bowl of beef noodle soup cost 40,000 VND, quite suitable for the city center.
Meanwhile, having not eaten Bun Bo Co Nhu for a long time, Ms. Thao (26 years old, Thu Duc City) said that after seeing the recently announced Michelin list, seeing the name of the Bun Bo restaurant familiar, she felt craving so she stopped by.
"Normally the restaurant is crowded, but today it seems even more crowded, you have to wait a bit to get a seat. I like this place not only because of the delicious food, but also because of the friendliness of the owner's family," she commented.
