TSMC founder Morris Chang revealed that he once invited Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to be his successor but was rejected.
In his recently published autobiography, Morris Chang said that in 2013, he offered Jensen Huang the job of CEO of TSMC. However, it took less than 10 minutes for the Nvidia CEO to reject the offer. “I already had a job,” the founder of the world’s largest foundry recalled.
Mr. Chang said Mr. Huang’s personality, academic background, and deep understanding of the semiconductor industry made him an ideal choice for the position of TSMC CEO. Despite listening to Mr. Chang explain his ambitions for TSMC for nearly 10 minutes, Mr. Huang remained determined to focus on Nvidia.
Since then, Nvidia has grown into one of the world’s largest public companies thanks to the AI boom. Mr. Huang has been CEO and chairman since Nvidia’s founding in 1993.
The relationship between the two CEOs has grown stronger over time. In its early years, Nvidia worked exclusively with TSMC. In 1998, TSMC brought employees to Nvidia when the chipmaker was short on staff. Although it now works with a variety of foundries, Nvidia remains one of TSMC’s largest customers.
Mr. Chang founded TSMC in 1987. He stepped down as CEO in 2018 and was replaced by C. C. Wei. According to Forbes, the TSMC founder's net worth is about $4.1 billion.
This is his second published autobiography, chronicling his life from 1964 to 2018.
