Italy becomes former champion, Germany enters quarter-finals

On the evening of June 29 and early morning of June 30 (Vietnam time), the round of 16 of EURO 2024 began with the first match between Italy and Switzerland.

Closing the group stage, Italy received expectations of a new look when entering the round of 16 against Switzerland. But right from the first minutes, the Swiss team showed complete superiority when controlling most of the ball time, at the same time creating a series of dangerous opportunities on Donnarumma's goal.

In the 37th minute, taking advantage of the Italian players not being able to keep their positions, Vargas crossed for Freuler to leisurely enter the penalty area to control the ball for a moment, then volleyed with his left foot to defeat goalkeeper Donnarumma.

Entering the second half, also from an attack on the right wing of Italy, Switzerland scored the second goal in the 46th minute, Ruben Vargas had a technical shot that sent the ball into the far corner, defeating goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After conceding two goals, Italy pushed up their formation to attack but did not cause much trouble for the Swiss defense. Italy's most dangerous situation came when Gianluca Scamacca's shot hit the post.

At the end of 90 minutes of play, Italy suffered a bitter defeat against Switzerland and officially became the former champion. Meanwhile, after the victory over Italy, Switzerland will face the winner of the match between England and Slovakia in the quarter-finals.

In the match that took place immediately after, the host Germany aimed for a ticket to the quarter-finals when facing Denmark in the round of 16. With the home advantage and being rated higher, Germany proactively attacked and pressured Denmark from the first minutes and opportunities continuously appeared. Denmark could only stand firm in the first half thanks to the excellence of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The first half of the match was suspended for 20 minutes after 35 minutes due to hail and lightning at Signal Iduna Park. After the break, the match resumed and Germany continued to press the field. In the 37th minute, Havertz jumped high to head the ball in the center of the penalty area but the ball went straight to Schmeichel. In the final minute of the first half, the German players lost the ball in the middle of the field and Denmark organized a quick attack. In a one-on-one situation with Neuer, Hojlund could not beat the German goalkeeper.

Entering the second half, a surprise happened in the 52nd minute, Andersen let the ball touch his hand in the penalty area, referee Oliver after reviewing VAR awarded Germany a penalty. At the 11m mark, Havertz shot into the right corner of the goal, Schmeichel dived in the right direction but could not touch the ball.

With the goal, Germany played proactively and scored the second goal in the 68th minute. Musiala escaped after a long pass from Schlotterbeck, the German striker curled the ball from the left side of the penalty area with his right foot, sending the ball diagonally past Schmeichel.

In the remaining minutes, Germany had many opportunities to increase the score but the strikers on the attack line could not take advantage of the opportunities and the match ended with a victory for the host Germany. Going straight to the quarter-finals, the opponent of Coach Julian Nagelsmann's team will be the winner of the match between Spain and Georgia./.
