(Dan Tri) - EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said Brussels is preparing to speed up membership negotiations for Ukraine by opening two rounds of negotiations in the middle of this year.

Joining the EU involves completing six rounds of negotiations covering 35 chapters with various requirements. Ukraine has not yet opened a single round of negotiations.
“From a technical point of view, we can be ready to open two rounds of negotiations with Ukraine in the first half of this year,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said on January 28. He also stressed that this would not be possible without member states.
The accession process requires the unanimous consent of all 27 EU member states at each stage. Hungary, Slovakia and Austria have opposed Ukraine’s membership for various reasons. However, Brussels’ leadership appears to be backing Kiev.
"It is essential that the EU grows further and has new member states," the bloc's top diplomat Kaja Kallas told reporters at the same press conference.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina has visited Brussels to push for faster EU accession, a visit seen as part of efforts to bolster Kiev's position ahead of planned peace talks with Moscow.
The European Commission has previously said Ukraine could join the bloc by 2029 if it makes sufficient progress in areas such as political and judicial reform, as well as fighting organised crime and corruption. Last June, Kiev's envoy to the EU, Katarina Mathernova, said 2030 was a "very realistic date".
Ukraine aims to become a member of the EU and NATO and included this goal in its 2019 constitutional amendment.
While Russia did not oppose Kiev's aspirations in the EU at the time, it firmly opposed any Ukrainian involvement with the US-led military bloc.
