Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country will negotiate with three European countries (UK, France, Germany) on restoring the 2015 nuclear deal on November 29.

According to Reuters, the meeting is scheduled to take place on November 29 in Geneva (Switzerland) as the government of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian seeks a solution to the nuclear standoff before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump in January 2025.

The landmark nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in 2015 by the parties, under which Iran would limit its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. However, on May 8, 2018, then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the deal and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Iran's deputy foreign minister and the three European countries will participate in the talks. "The views that will be exchanged are a range of regional issues including the Palestinian, Lebanese and nuclear issues," Baghaei said.

"Tehran has always believed that the nuclear issue should be resolved through diplomacy. Iran has never walked away from negotiations," a senior Iranian official said on condition of anonymity.

The planned talks between Iran and the three European countries will be the first nuclear talks since President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in late July to replace the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May.

EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano told ISNA news agency on November 24 that he hoped nuclear talks with Iran would resume soon. Stano also stressed that a solution to Iran's nuclear issue would also benefit regional stability, and expressed that Europe would take a comprehensive political approach based on mutual respect. According to Stano, the EU has contacted Iranian President Pezeshkian and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to maintain all channels of communication open and the possibility of nuclear negotiations.

Regarding the possibility of resuming negotiations to lift sanctions on Iran, Mr. Stano said that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and his team are in contact with Iran, the US and parties involved in the 2015 nuclear program to maintain all communication channels and the possibility of nuclear negotiations. The US side has not commented on the new information above.

Previously, indirect negotiations between the Biden administration and Iran to try to restore the JCPOA failed. In September, during the election campaign, Mr. Trump asserted: "We have to make a deal, because the consequences are impossible. We have to make a deal."
