Tonight, March 23, at Fidel Park - Dong Ha City, the Department of Industry and Trade, in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam (WWF-Vietnam), organized the Countdown Event of Earth Hour Campaign 2024. Earth Hour is an initiative initiated by the World Wildlife Fund to raise public awareness of energy saving, environmental protection, and climate change response worldwide, officially launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The annual Earth Hour campaign has grown and become the world's largest environmental action, bringing together countries and territories across continents to participate.
Every year, within the framework of Earth Hour, there will be a lights-off event, calling on all people, organizations, and agencies across the country to turn off the lights for one hour on the last Saturday night of March. The purpose of the activity is to remind people to join hands to save energy and protect the environment.

In 2009, Vietnam officially joined Earth Hour. Quang Tri province was one of the first localities to implement activities in response to this event. Since then, Quang Tri province has continuously responded and organized the Earth Hour event in a very practical and effective manner. Thereby, contributing to expanding the influence of the event, the theme of Earth Hour each year is spread to reach the cooperation of the community and all classes of people.
In 2024, Quang Tri province will continue to implement the Earth Hour Campaign with the message: "Making electricity saving a habit" and "Reducing carbon footprint - Towards Netzero". Thereby, continuing to raise awareness and responsibility of the community in using energy economically and efficiently, protecting the environment, responding to climate change, contributing to promoting the implementation of Directive No. 20/CT-TTg dated June 8, 2023 of the Prime Minister on enhancing electricity saving in the period of 2023-2025 and the following years.

Director of WWF-Vietnam Thibault Ledecq shared: Despite facing many challenges related to climate change and the environment, Quang Tri province is still steadfast in pursuing the vision of sustainable development in parallel with nature conservation and restoration. At the same time, he expressed his impression of the results that Quang Tri province has achieved in nature conservation and biodiversity. In the coming time, WWF-Vietnam is committed to continuing to accompany Quang Tri in the long term, supporting Quang Tri in environmental issues, biodiversity conservation to create an increasingly green, clean and beautiful living environment.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong emphasized: The Earth Hour 2024 campaign is a very meaningful event in raising awareness of energy saving, environmental protection, and climate change response, contributing to realizing Vietnam's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
To make the response to the Earth Hour Campaign more effective, the Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong called on all people, communities, agencies, units and businesses to respond to this campaign with specific actions such as: Turning off unnecessary electrical equipment; mobilizing and guiding organizations and people to raise awareness and change behavior in a positive direction regarding environmental protection in residential communities; promoting and honoring advanced models and examples of environmental protection and taking advantage of opportunities from climate change response to shift the growth model, enhance the resilience and competitiveness of the economy. Thereby, contributing and joining hands with the whole country towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 according to Vietnam's commitment at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee hopes that in the coming time, Quang Tri province will continue to receive the attention and support of leaders at all levels from international organizations, central to local levels, the enthusiastic participation of all people and the support of media agencies in propagating and promoting information so that the Earth Hour and electricity saving campaign 2024 in Quang Tri province is not only an action in 60 minutes but an action throughout 365 days of 2024.
The Earth Hour 2024 campaign took place from 20:30 to 21:30, Saturday, March 23, 2024 with the message aiming at "Making saving electricity a habit" and "Reducing carbon footprint - Towards Netzero".
