Chau Tuyet Van is one of the most outstanding athletes of Vietnamese sports in general and taekwondo in particular. The female martial artist born in 1990 has participated in the Southeast Asian Games 8 times and won 6 consecutive gold medals since 2013. Most recently, in the 2023 SEA Games held in Cambodia, she and her teammates won an emotional championship in taekwondo in the team creative boxing event.
The "hot girl" of the martial arts village confided: "I have been persistent and constantly trying for more than ten years of competing and participating in 8 SEA Games. The first time I participated, I won a bronze medal (in 2009), the second time I won a silver medal (in 2011) and it was not until the third time in 2013 in Myanmar that I won my first gold medal."
Chau Tuyet Van talks about the reason she decided to stop at SEA Games
At the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, Vietnamese sports fans witnessed the emotional scene of Chau Tuyet Van shedding tears. "At the 32nd SEA Games, I participated as the defending champion of 5 previous gold medals. However, winning the championship is difficult, but maintaining the championship is even more difficult. This time is really dangerous, because if I do not win the gold medal, I will receive mixed public opinion. My coach and everyone hope that I will continue to win the gold medal after 5 previous championships," the 33-year-old female boxer shared.
Chau Tuyet Van added about the moment she was in tears: "Before that, I told my teacher that for me, just being able to step onto the field to compete was the happiest thing, but he still decided to let me compete. In a very difficult situation, with the referee, the home field, they over-timed my time. In that moment, I thought I wanted a silver or bronze medal but couldn't even get it. At that time, I was very sad and upset. But after all my efforts, luck smiled on me. And I decided to stop, that was the last SEA Games (32)".
The female boxer who won 6 consecutive gold medals at the SEA Games said that although she decided to say goodbye to the regional arena, she will continue to compete in other competitions. "Regarding the decision to stop at the SEA Games, the first thing is that I want to defend these 6 consecutive gold medals, because it is extremely important to me. It is a very long journey during more than 10 years of competing. I only stop to defend my achievements and besides that, to give the next generation of athletes a chance to develop," the female boxer born in 1990 said about the reason she decided to stop competing at the Southeast Asian Games.
Chau Tuyet Van will continue to participate in other tournaments.
"I will stop at the SEA Games but will continue in other playgrounds. Sports blood is in me, so no matter what, I will not give up. I am still on the selection list for ASIAD. I am still in the process of training, preparing for the national championship. Through this national championship, I will select for ASIAD and the Asian Indoor Games. I am a bit old, but I will continue to try, persevere in competing to contribute to Vietnamese sports", Chau Tuyet Van confided.
Besides training and competing to prepare for bigger arenas such as ASIAD (held in Hangzhou, China in September) and the Asian Indoor Games, the "hot girl" of the martial arts village also has her own plans. Currently, Chau Tuyet Van has opened a club and is the Head of the Taekwondo Department of District 4 (HCMC).
