With diverse plateau terrain, combined with a long rainy season and heavy rainfall, Lam Dong has become one of the localities with a high risk of landslides and flash floods. During the rainy season, landslides most often occur on mountain passes with steep slopes such as National Highways 20, 27, 28, and Road 723; landslides occur on rivers and streams in the province such as Da B'sa River (Da Huoai District), Dong Nai River (Cat Tien District), Da Nhim River (Don Duong District), Da Dang River (Lam Ha District), Da Mi Stream, Da Teh River (Da Teh District), Krong No River (Dam Rong District), and steep slopes (Lac Duong District).
In urban areas in the province, landslides also often occur in D'ran town (Don Duong district), Da Lat city. In particular, landslides caused by geological disasters occur seriously in Di Linh town and the communes of Dinh Lac, Tan Nghia, Gia Hiep (Di Linh district), Dong Thanh commune (Lam Ha district), Bao Loc pass (Bao Loc city), Da K'nang commune (Dam Rong district).

According to statistics from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the province currently has more than 510 locations at risk of landslides and flash floods, of which 396 are at risk of landslides, 101 are at risk of flooding and flash floods, and 3 are at risk of subsidence. In Dam Rong district, according to the results of the review and statistics, there are currently 47 locations at risk of landslides in the district, of which 8 are at high risk of landslides, with 146 households at risk of being affected. The most serious landslide incident occurred in the area in mid-July, killing 3 people and completely collapsing 2 houses with an estimated property damage of about 3 billion VND.
In Da Lat City, functional units also recorded 51 points. On National Highway 20 alone, through Tram Hanh and Xuan Truong communes, 4 landslides appeared. Or the landslide in a residential area in Ward 3 forced 6 households to evacuate to ensure safety.
According to the assessment from the authorities, the direct cause of climate change in Lam Dong province, the rainy season from May to November, the average rainfall is from 1,750 - 3,150mm/year, the province has a rainfall always higher than the national average. High rainfall, lasting for many days, locally heavy rains are the cause of weak ground, causing landslides. In addition, construction activities, leveling, digging and filling to create construction sites for construction works in locations, areas of steep slopes, high negative/positive slopes, with the risk of landslides are also one of the causes of landslides, slides, and ground cracks and affecting the safety of people's lives and property.

To strengthen prevention solutions, Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee has issued a Decision on detailed allocation of the central budget reserve to support overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and landslides in 2023 in the province with an amount of 280 billion VND from the central budget reserve in 2023 to repair essential infrastructure caused by natural disasters in the recent past.
Accordingly, Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee has allocated funding for 11 construction projects to 8 localities and 1 unit for implementation. Departments, branches and localities carry out specific tasks to limit the risk of landslides and local flooding in the province. Focusing on the following contents: reviewing constructions with potential risks of landslides, residential areas along rivers, streams, and slopes with large slope differences for early handling. Reviewing planning projects to ensure maximum limitation of landslides and flooding; ensuring drainage planning. Making maps of landslide and flash flood zoning to serve as a basis for planning and construction management. Building a monitoring, forecasting and early warning system for landslides and floods. Continuing to implement the research topic on proposing solutions to reduce flooding in the inner city of Da Lat, which has been approved by the province in 2023;...
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has advised the Provincial People's Committee to develop a Plan to implement the Project on early warning of landslides and flash floods in Lam Dong province; in which specific tasks are assigned to relevant departments, branches and local People's Committees for implementation. A number of landslide and flood prevention projects have been implemented in 2023.
Relevant departments, branches and local People's Committees review, compile statistics and provide information on areas where geological disasters, subsidence, landslides and flash floods occur. The review results have been summarized and reported to the Provincial People's Committee for approval in principle of developing the content, volume and budget of the Task "Investigation, assessment, survey and supplement of database on natural disasters, landslides and flash floods, creating risk zoning maps, landslide and flash flood risk zoning maps at a scale of 1:10,000 and larger (1:5,000, 1:2,000) for locations and areas at high risk of landslides and flash floods in Duc Trong district and Da Lat and Bao Loc cities".
Continuously closely monitor the situation and developments of weather and natural disasters to proactively deploy response measures according to the 4-on-the-spot motto; review plans, prepare forces and means to proactively respond to unusual situations and incidents that may occur; resolutely relocate and evacuate people, vehicles and assets from dangerous areas, especially areas of rivers, streams, and slopes at risk of landslides, flash floods, and deep flooding to ensure the safety of people's lives and property; strictly implement 24-hour on-duty to promptly direct, handle and effectively respond to situations caused by natural disasters.
Landslides are one of the most dangerous natural disasters that can occur in places where people do not expect. Landslides are also one of the major problems caused by storm No. 3 and its circulation. The number of casualties and missing people due to landslides is still increasing in many localities. According to statistics, more than 300 people have died and gone missing, mainly due to landslides.
In an effort to forecast and warn of landslides early, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has implemented a project on early warning of flash floods and landslides in mountainous and midland areas. Accordingly, an early warning information system will be established, and landslide and flash flood warning models will be developed for 37 midland and mountainous provinces. Investigation, data collection, mapping of current status, risk zoning maps, and landslide and flash flood risk zoning at a scale of 1/10,000 and larger will be conducted for 150 high-risk areas. The initial map set has shown 220 communes at the highest landslide level, which coincides with the landslide phenomenon and the actual landslide-prone areas.
The plan also focuses on building an early warning information system and a system of medium- and large-scale, synchronous, and comprehensive risk zoning maps. At the same time, it provides and exchanges warning information with the community, enhancing the disaster response capacity of local officials and people to mitigate natural disasters caused by landslides and flash floods.
