CONTINUE TO CAUSE FEVER

Messi has just returned to play in the US and has immediately caused a stir. In the last two matches with Inter Miami, Messi has helped the home teams make huge profits. Atlanta United's Mercedes-Benz Stadium attracted 67,795 fans, while New York City FC's Yankee Stadium attracted 44,738 fans. These are stadiums that usually host football and baseball, but the clubs have often used them to host football since MLS recruited Messi.

Ronaldo (left) and Messi are "at odds" in terms of attracting spectators to the stadium.

To date, Messi has set many attendance records for away matches in MLS. For example, Sporting Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium, also home to the Kansas City Chiefs, attracted 72,610 spectators. New England Revolution's Gillette Stadium once welcomed the highest attendance in the team's history, up to 65,612. Not only in the US, Messi's matches in Canada such as the matches against CF Montreal or Vancouver Whitecaps FC were "sold out".

CONTRARY SITUATION

Ronaldo is the "king" of social media, with a record number of more than 1 billion followers on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube... However, on the field, this 39-year-old player is not "hot" enough to attract fans to watch matches in the Saudi Pro League, even at Al Nassr Club's home stadium Al Awwal Park in Saudi Arabia.

Al Awwal Park has a capacity of 26,100 spectators, but rarely has a full stadium. In the opening match of the 2024-2025 season, only 8,951 fans attended. In the most recent match, this number increased to 23,644 spectators. Meanwhile, many other away matches, even with Ronaldo's presence, such as the match against Al Fayha, only attracted a mere 4,195 spectators, or the match against Al Ettifaq on September 21, only had 9,390 spectators. In the previous season in the AFC Champions League, in a knockout match featuring Ronaldo and the Al Nassr stars, it only attracted 3,111 spectators, becoming one of the matches with the lowest number of viewers in the history of the Asian cup tournament.
