Britain's late regret

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/02/2025

The process of Britain leaving the EU (Brexit) was officially completed 5 years ago (January 31, 2020). In the fateful referendum for this island nation held on June 23, 2016, the percentage of British voters supporting Brexit was nearly 52%.

Polls in late 2024 and early 2025 showed support for Brexit at just 44%, with 56% wanting the island to rejoin the EU. But it’s too late for regrets now.

Brexit has freed Britain from all legal ties with the EU and freed the island from all commitments to the bloc in many ways. But Brexit has also ended

Britain needs more time to overcome the negative consequences of Brexit

For 47 years and 30 days, the UK has benefited greatly from the EU in many ways. In the past 5 years, the UK has not found new sources of benefits that can compensate and replace the benefits it has gained from EU membership.

Since Brexit, the UK has explored a number of new markets but not enough to replace the EU, and certainly not enough to develop the economy and society and expand trade more successfully than before Brexit. While the service sector is still stable, the manufacturing sector on the island has declined sharply. Exports to the EU have decreased by nearly 30%. There is a clear shortage of high-quality labor. Foreign investment in the UK has declined because the investment environment on the island cannot compete with EU members.

The UK needs more time to overcome the negative consequences of Brexit. After 5 years, the UK is not yet forced to return to the EU but cannot help but move closer to the EU.
