Can I become a public school teacher with an English degree?

I am a new student majoring in English Language, I want to study for a second degree in Pedagogy to become a teacher, but I am afraid I won't be able to get into a public school.

So, I plan to study for a double degree in English Education to increase my chances of working in a public school.

In this case, am I qualified to teach in public schools, and are my career opportunities less than those of graduates with a formal English Pedagogy degree?
