Vietnamese youth need to make efforts to improve their English skills.

(NLDO) - English departments of universities mainly provide in-depth training in language and teaching, while foreign language centers are stronger in skills.

On the morning of December 21, the Ho Chi Minh City Association for English Language Teaching and Research (HCMC TESOL Association) and its operating unit Horizon TESOL held a ceremony to award TESOL certificates to nearly 100 students and signed strategic cooperation agreements with 25educational institutions, including universities and English centers.

Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City English Teaching and Research Association, said that the event not only honored students who completed the English teacher training program to obtain TESOL certificates, but also marked an important step forward in improving the quality of training that is close to reality, promoting professional activities and career development for students majoring in English teaching.

At the event, the HCMC TESOL Association signed a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of English, Foreign Languages and the International Training Institute of the following universities: HCMC Pedagogy, HCMC Economics - Finance, HCMC Technology, Gia Dinh, Van Hien, Nguyen Tat Thanh, Binh Duong University, and the companionship of 20 prestigious educational organizations and English centers at home and abroad such as British Council, National Geographic, FAHASA, IDP, DOL English, VIETOP, Ms. Ngan's English, IELTS Master, Minh Khuu Academy, Global American Academy, Wewin Education...

Speaking to a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc assessed that English departments of universities mainly provide in-depth training in language and teaching, while foreign language centers often provide more training in skills. He said that the role of the association is to connect English departments and foreign language centers to help exchange resources, job opportunities, teaching opportunities and joint research within the English teacher community.

Dr. Loc also believes that for the generation born in the 1970s and those born in the early 1980s of the last century, English is an important "weapon" because it is a tool to earn more income because people with good English skills will stand out in their jobs and offices.

"Although the demand for English is very high, according to international rankings, Vietnam is still only in the average group in terms of English proficiency. This shows that young Vietnamese people still need to make more efforts to improve their English proficiency," said Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc.
