Since the beginning of this year, many schools in Lang Chanh District (Thanh Hoa Province) have had to temporarily suspend some subjects due to a lack of teachers. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Chanh District, said that although the province assigned a quota for recruiting teachers to overcome this situation and the district also widely announced it on mass media, few people came to submit their applications. As of this school year, the entire district is still short of 92 positions compared to the number assigned by the province.
Not only Lang Chanh district, other mountainous districts in Thanh Hoa such as Quan Son, Quan Hoa, Muong Lat... also share the same situation of difficulty in finding recruitment sources.
Faced with this situation, many VietNamNet readers believe that the shortage of teachers is concentrated in remote districts and remote areas. Not many people accept being assigned to difficult areas, while the areas lacking teachers do not have the resources to call for and encourage teachers to serve the cause of education.
“So will ‘teachers who can’t find a job after graduating’ work in those places? Everyone wants to work in places with economic development, staying in urban areas will make it very difficult to find a job,” commented a reader.
To solve this problem, the reader “suggests” that we should apply the same method as the military. After graduation, graduates will be assigned to localities that are lacking teachers. That is a task, everyone must comply. If they do not comply, they will not be recruited by any school.
"If there was a rotation policy like the border guards, the mountainous provinces would have less trouble," a reader wrote.
Meanwhile, some opinions suggest that there should be an independent agency to organize teacher recruitment exams, then distribute them to localities in need. Recruitment of civil servants needs to be strictly managed, such as high school graduation exams, confidentiality of examiners, supervisors, exam questions, locations, etc. This will push back negativity and select talented people.
“Currently, some localities are in dire need of teachers, but to get in, candidates must go through many complicated procedures,” a reader expressed.
Meanwhile, there are opinions that many localities "complain" about a lack of teachers, but in reality, no recruitment information is made public or when candidates ask, leaders say "there are enough".
Therefore, according to some readers, provinces and cities need to publicly and transparently publish detailed statistics on the number of teachers lacking in each school, in which subjects, so that those who wish to know and apply can do so.
“That way, we won’t have to worry about negative things like ‘running’ for a teaching position. After graduating, pedagogical students also want to return to their hometowns to contribute, not leave their hometowns and work in a different field.”
Besides, according to readers, another reason why recruiting teachers is difficult is because the salary of contract teachers is "not enough to live on", but getting on the payroll is also very difficult.
“While high-paying businesses only require a 2-3 month probation period, teachers who want to wait to be hired to pursue their career find it very difficult and do not know how long they have to wait. No one just ‘works for passion’, especially in remote areas,” reader Tran Nguyen wrote.
When teachers from the lowlands are not “keen” on going to remote areas, many people believe that mountainous areas need to have special policies for teachers, sponsoring local students to study pedagogy and then return to their hometowns to work. In addition, the remuneration system also needs to create both material and spiritual motivation to encourage and attract them.
“If there are policies that encourage and guarantee income for teachers, I believe they will be willing to return or go to difficult areas to contribute,” a reader wrote.
Unable to recruit teachers, many schools in Thanh Hoa have had to stop teaching some subjects. Since the beginning of the school year, many schools in mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa have not been able to arrange teaching of English, IT, and Music due to lack of teachers.
