Afternoon visit, evening return

Present at the Department of On-Demand Medical Examination and Treatment, Bach Mai Hospital at 5:10 pm on August 3, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (53 years old, in Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province) shared that recently, she has felt tired, had no appetite, and sometimes had stomach pain. She planned to ask her son to take her to Hanoi for a check-up but hesitated for a long time. Knowing that Bach Mai Hospital extended its after-hours examination time, she asked her son to take her there and returned home after the examination that evening.

Bach Mai Hospital is no longer overloaded thanks to providing medical examination and treatment outside of working hours.

Ms. Thanh was examined by Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tra (Deputy Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, Bach Mai Hospital), who checked her thyroid, liver problems, and tested for parasitic infections. Dr. Tra said that all the examinations and results were completed in the evening.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pham Le Thu (in Hai Duong) has been suffering from constant pain and poor bone and joint health. She has been examined at lower-level hospitals and treated for many years, but still wants to go to a higher-level hospital for a check-up for peace of mind. However, because she is afraid of waiting and queuing, she has not been able to make arrangements.

"Yesterday, I read in the newspaper that Bach Mai Hospital offers examinations until late at night, so I registered online. This afternoon, I took half an afternoon off work and traveled from Hai Duong to see a doctor at 3:30 p.m. This time frame is very convenient for administrative workers like me," Ms. Thu shared.

According to records, the scene of patients jostling in line to wait for examination during office hours is no longer like before.

Reduce the load on hospitals

Since August 1, Bach Mai Hospital has started to provide out-of-hours medical examinations, so the number of people coming to see a doctor is not too large. Examination rooms and testing rooms are located in the same building, making it more convenient for people.

Currently, the hospital receives 6-8 thousand outpatients and about 4 thousand inpatients every day. Of these, only about 20% are from Hanoi, the remaining 80% come from other provinces and cities across the country.

"With a large number of patients, especially between 6am and 9am, the situation of crowded queues and traffic jams from the street to the hospital happens frequently. With the expansion of examination hours, people can easily arrange their work to go to the hospital, avoiding having to queue and wait," informed Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Giap, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that this is considered a temporary solution to reduce hospital overload in the short term. In the long term, the hospital will comply with Resolution 20 of the Central Committee on developing grassroots healthcare.

Accordingly, the hospital will continue to deploy professional training and provide guidance according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health. The goal is that in the near future, with common diseases, people can be examined right at the facility, without having to go to the Central level.

Increase income for doctors and nurses

According to Dr. Giap, when examining after hours, the hospital arranges all the examination rooms and specialties as during office hours including: Endocrinology, Digestion, Musculoskeletal, Neurology, Respiratory, Nephrology, Cardiology, Infectious, Hematology, Intensive Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, ENT, Dentistry, Ophthalmology...

Bach Mai Hospital has implemented out-of-hours medical examinations since August 1 to both reduce workload and increase income for medical staff.

Implementing out-of-hours medical examination and treatment not only helps reduce the workload and meet patient needs, but also solves the problem of increasing income for legitimate medical staff.

"There was a period after the Covid-19 pandemic, when the unit was facing difficulties, many employees had to deliver goods, sell online... to earn extra income. The hospital's leadership was very concerned about how employees could increase their income with their own skills, and patients could stop waiting from midnight.

Therefore, the resolution on after-hours medical examination received great support, with more than 2,000 officers and employees registering to participate," Dr. Giap shared.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co informed that the revenue from after-hours medical examination and treatment activities, after deducting financial obligations, will be converted into income for directly participating workers. This is a legitimate and legal additional income for all voluntary workers.

"The hospital will have appropriate mechanisms and policies to protect the rights of doctors when they participate in medical examination and treatment after hours. They are legally protected and have better rights than private clinics," Mr. Co informed.

Bach Mai Hospital arranges medical examination time from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (Monday to Friday) and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday). Patients can contact the hotline 1900.888.866 to make an appointment between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. or visit the website and fanpage of Bach Mai Hospital to find information and consult the doctor's examination schedule.

"Bach Mai Hospital has sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Health proposing that health insurance examination and treatment be available outside of working hours. Patients with a card or referral letter are eligible for health insurance," said Mr. Co.
