Universities are taking action against students with poor academic results, thousands of students are at risk of dropping out of school right from the first semester.

Recently, many universities in Ho Chi Minh City have announced the list of students who were forced to leave school. Notably, one university announced the list of nearly 2,000 students who fell into the "red alert" category.

Hundreds of reasons why students drop out of school

At the end of September, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education announced the list of students who were placed on probation, warned about their academic performance in the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year, and were forced to drop out of the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year. The school "named" nearly 2,000 students due to poor academic performance. In particular, there are 88 students expected to be forced to drop out of the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, these students had 2 consecutive semesters with an average semester score below 1 or had the number of credits not meeting the regulations.

Similarly, in October 2024, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law announced a list of 41 full-time university students expected to be forced to drop out of school and 75 full-time university students expected to be given academic warning due to poor academic performance in the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year.

Banking Academy also announced a list of more than 450 students who will be subject to academic discipline in the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Of these, 241 students were forced to drop out of school due to exceeding the maximum training period of 6 years and being warned academically 3 times in a row.

Sharing about this situation, a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law said that the university entrance score is quite high, so most students have good academic performance. The reason for dropping out of school midway is mainly because students do not choose the right major, students have plans to study abroad...

Không ít sinh viên sau một thời gian nhập học đã nghỉ học giữa chừng vì nhiều lý do

Many students drop out of school after a period of enrollment for various reasons.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that for each student who drops out midway, the school will find out the specific reason. "For first-year students, it is mainly due to choosing the wrong major. For final-year students, they are distracted by working many part-time jobs, leading to unsatisfactory academic results," said Mr. Nhan.

MSc. Bui Quang Trung, Head of the Communications Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, said that students forced to drop out of school or receive academic warnings due to academic performance account for about 7% per year. This time, the school has 3,875 students receiving the first academic warning and 1,490 students receiving decisions to force them to drop out of school...

According to Mr. Trung, students being forced to drop out and being warned about academic performance at universities is quite common nowadays for many reasons. Among them, some students confided that they "failed" because the learning methods at university are different from those at high school.

Universities have a "headache" because of the rate of students dropping out of school.

Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is soliciting comments on a draft circular regulating the determination of university education enrollment targets and college enrollment targets for preschool education.

The draft has two new points that universities are concerned about. Specifically: limiting the increase in university quotas for schools with a first-year dropout rate higher than 15% and a graduate employment rate lower than 70%.

Previously, the 2022 Circular did not stipulate the dropout rate, only stipulated that the quota would not be increased if the rate of graduates with jobs within 12 months of being recognized as graduating in that field was lower than 80%, or the rate of implementing the enrollment quota of that field in the enrollment year immediately preceding the enrollment year was lower than 80%.

Sharing about this issue, Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that students dropping out of school halfway causes the school a lot of headaches, even affecting the school's reputation. Many people will ask how the school teaches that students only study for 1-2 years and then drop out.

According to Master Trung, the number of students dropping out of school every year is a huge waste for society. Therefore, the school pays special attention to first-year students.

"To make career guidance effective, the school builds and connects a network with high schools across the country to provide counseling and psychological guidance in choosing a career from the beginning for students; regularly organizes seminars on learning goals, mental health, determining career interests and steps to find a suitable job after graduation for first-year students," Mr. Trung added.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan said that many students were "disillusioned" because they believed in the rosy picture of university lecture halls. Although the number of students dropping out of school is only a small part, if we look at it more broadly, in Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country, this number is extremely large, meaning a huge waste for both students and training units.

Busy with recruiting, forget about career guidance

Some universities are currently in the position of recruiting as many students as possible. They attract students by considering their academic records, attractive training programs, "hot" majors with high employment opportunities... but forget to guide students to choose to study the major they love.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, the draft Circular is closely following the reality of universities, requiring universities to improve career guidance for students. "It is not necessary to pass the university entrance exam and study "hot" majors to be successful. After graduating from high school, students have many directions to choose from. Only when they find a major they love, will their studies be meaningful and achieve good results" - Dr. Nhan emphasized.
