Recently, photos taken at the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater with the interior design of many rows of large wooden seats combined with tea tables caused a lot of controversy.
Many people say that this row of seats "is not suitable for the space of a theater", while others defend it, saying that the beautiful, magnificent structure is suitable for the scale of a theater in the Quan Ho region.
It is known that the project was designed by three architects Ngo Trung Hai, Tran Hoang Hai Nam, and Tran Anh Son. The theater was awarded the Silver Prize in the Public Architecture category of the 15th National Architecture Awards (2022 - 2023).
Considered very carefully

Sharing with PV Dan Tri , the representative of the design team said that in recent days, the whole team has read many conflicting opinions online. With an architectural work, praise and criticism are inevitable.
According to this representative, whether a project is successful or not, there are different opinions, some support it, some do not, and the design team respects it.
"We have been working on this project since 2016. It was a long journey as the design consulting team had to compete with 17 other teams. After being selected, we came up with 20 options to convince the local authorities.
The idea of making modern chairs was also carefully considered by us before being proposed. Fortunately, this idea was approved, and we had a long time to work with Bac Ninh province to carry out the construction. The project was a work of great dedication, and looking back now, we are still proud," said a representative of the consulting group.
Speaking more about the design idea, this representative said that Bac Ninh is a locality with a unique history and culture. Even when consulting, there were opinions that it should be antique from the outside in, the whole group spent a lot of time to come up with an architectural plan, to have a suitable and harmonious design.
"This is a budget project, most projects of this type often find it difficult to do "something new", so when there are innovations, we hope everyone will support them," said a representative of the group of architects.
Wooden benches are suitable, why argue?
Talking about the wooden seats at the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater, architect Tran Huy Anh - Standing Member of the Hanoi Architects Association told Dan Tri reporter that the design of the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater is quite modern, but having such wooden seats is a "new and old combination" which is quite suitable and not controversial as people are talking about.
"Maybe the wooden chair and tea table design will be a unique style of this theater. Whether the table and chair set is beautiful or not depends on everyone's perspective, but I think the consulting architects have their reasons for placing the table and chair set like that.
"Talking about green environment and not being environmentally friendly is also not correct. We have regulations on afforestation and timber harvesting. All have their own regulations, so we should not judge randomly by looking at images on the internet," said Architect Tran Huy Anh.

Painter and sculptor Pham Sinh agrees with architect Tran Huy Anh, he thinks that the wooden chair design at Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater is quite good. Sculptor Pham Sinh himself has seen the exterior of this Theater, he sees that the wooden chairs are suitable for the design inspired by the traditional communal house roof, with a 2-layer covering, the bamboo strip on the outside has the motif of Ba Tam conical hat outside the theater.
"Bac Ninh has woodworking villages like Dong Ky, so the theater using wooden chairs will stimulate local consumption. Wood is a very durable product, if possible, the cushion pattern can be changed a bit, otherwise it's okay to leave it as it is.
Using wooden chairs is appropriate, it is an organic material and promotes the local craft village. If we use European or Chinese style chairs, it would be worth discussing. "Sap gu tu che" is a suitable architecture for this theater. Arguing is not advisable, because we must know clearly before we speak, otherwise it will hurt the maker, the person who put so much effort into creating that work", sculptor Pham Sinh frankly said.
