On July 10, heavy rains fell in the provinces of North Jeolla and South Chungcheong in South Korea. The rainfall amounted to 255mm in just a few hours, causing widespread flooding. This was the heaviest rainfall in the past 200 years in this country.
Four people have died in rain-related incidents, according to the South Korean Ministry of the Interior. The death toll is expected to rise as more people are reported missing in North Chungcheong Province.
According to preliminary reports, 3,000 people have been evacuated, nearly 4,000 have lost their homes, and many cars, roads, dikes and public buildings have been flooded. Twenty-one flights have been canceled at Gimhae International Airport in the southeastern port city of Busan and 16 others have been delayed.
All train services on the Janghang Line in South Chungcheong Province and the Kyungbuk Line in North Kyungsang Province will be suspended until 6 p.m. on July 10.
