The countryside we are talking about is the hot sand area of Binh Duong, which was twice awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State (in 1970, 1972) and was awarded the title of Hero of Labor in 1985.
Land of Revolution
We visited Mr. Le Thanh Nghi, former Political Commissar of Binh Duong Commune Team in the 1970s. Although Mr. Nghi was old, he became very lively when talking about the years of fighting of the army and people at Bau Binh base.
Mr. Nghi said that in early 1971, after the enemy established the concentration area of hamlets 3 and 2 and set up 6 outposts in Binh Duong commune; the commune and hamlet guerrillas and nearly 300 people came out to settle in Bau Binh. The working team of the communes in the eastern part of Thang Binh district that were pushed out by the enemy also relied on this area to hold on. The commune Party Committee coordinated with the district and provincial troops operating in the eastern part of Thang Binh to build the Bau Binh base.
The Bau Binh base was surrounded by forts and concentration areas, and was continuously and fiercely attacked by the enemy, tightly controlled, but it was still consolidated and held firm. At the base, cadres, soldiers, guerrillas, and people overcame all difficulties, building and reinforcing fortifications. Here, the system of fortifications, traffic trenches, and secret tunnels were firmly built thanks to the contributions of the army and people in the Bau Binh base.
During the two years of 1971-1972, our army and people united to repel many enemy attacks. In early December 1972, the US and puppet forces concentrated a large force including infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft to launch many attacks to destroy the Bau Binh base. Our army and people fought back fiercely, destroying many enemies and tanks. Many times the enemy tried to penetrate deep into our defensive positions but were repelled.
However, due to the enemy's fierce and persistent attacks, our combat conditions were facing many difficulties, so we organized for the people to evacuate and local troops to retreat to the Tay Thang Binh area. Mr. Nghi was one of the last people to withdraw from the Bau Binh base.
And the changes
Taking us around Binh Duong commune, Mr. Le Thanh Nghi was delighted with the changes in his hometown, with smooth roads, new streets, and spacious resettlement areas.
He said that the traffic axes, especially the main road of Binh Duong commune connecting the commune center with Vo Chi Cong street and National Highway 1, have been connected, ensuring regional connectivity, creating favorable conditions for Binh Duong to expand space and land fund for development. According to Mr. Nghi, Binh Duong commune has initially promoted its advantages and potentials, gradually developing tourism and services, typically Vinpearl Nam Hoi An.
Binh Duong Commune is the center of the eastern Thang Binh region. This is the area connecting and coordinating the development of sectors, fields, developing industry, services, trade, and coastal tourism.
Binh Duong has favorable conditions to form a coastal tourism development space of Duy Xuyen - Thang Binh connecting Hoi An tourism space on the basis of promoting the natural ecological values of rivers and seas, building conference centers, trade, entertainment and resort areas. Up to now, the tourism, service, trade and industry sectors account for 77% of the commune's economic structure.
Mr. Dang Van Hung - Secretary of Binh Duong Commune Party Committee said: "Binh Duong develops its socio-economics in conjunction with solutions to protect the environment and cultural identity. For sustainable development, the commune absolutely does not negatively affect the environment for economic benefits. The locality gradually applies circular economic models, clean production, energy saving, especially mobilizing resources and resources for tourism and services."
