Hai Phong: Economic development through effective use of water resources

Việt NamViệt Nam19/06/2024

Aquaculture has brought economic efficiency to many households in Lap Le commune (Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city). According to the people, the success or failure of aquaculture depends on many factors, in which water resources play a very important role.

Lap Le is a coastal commune located in the southeast of Thuy Nguyen district , with a population of nearly 14,000 people and a natural area of 1,179.57 hectares. The commune has a sea dike line to prevent salinity over 6km, 75 hectares of mangrove forest and wave-breaking trees, 317 hectares of aquaculture land on the alluvial plains along the river outside the national dike and 100 hectares of freshwater aquaculture. In the commune, there are currently more than 400 households raising brackish and freshwater aquaculture, mainly raising grass carp and sea bass.

According to Mr. Dinh Khac Quy (70 years old, owner of a black carp pond in Mat Rong, Lap Le commune), his family has been raising aquatic products for 8 years now. The pond used to be a fallow field, so his family spent effort and money to build a pond, embankment system, clean the pond, invest in a water wheel fan to create oxygen for the fish...

Initially, with an area of 1 hectare of water surface, Mr. Quy released about 3,000 black carp fry. However, because the fry were raised from small size, it took 2 years, when the fish weighed 4-5 kg/fish, to be harvested. At that time, Mr. Quy's family earned about 1 billion, including capital and interest.

Lap Le commune currently has more than 400 aquaculture households.

After a while, Mr. Quy decided to expand the farming area to 1.3 hectares, with about 7,000 juveniles. To harvest quickly, Mr. Quy chose to buy juveniles weighing about 2kg, so it was harvested just one year later.

Accordingly, with 7,000 fry, each year Mr. Quy's family has to spend about 2.5 billion, including: Money to buy fry, medicine, food, electricity... Currently, the price of black carp is 65,000 VND/kg, so after deducting all expenses, the profit is about more than 200 million.

According to Mr. Quy, the success or failure of aquaculture depends on many factors, of which water source plays a very important role. Therefore, his family had to buy water quality measuring equipment so that when the water is found to be unsafe, it must be replaced immediately and disinfected. However, the water in his pond is taken from the Ruot Lon River, so it is very safe and suitable for aquaculture.

Aquaculture has brought economic efficiency to many people in Lap Le commune.

Mr. Vu Van Da - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Lap Le commune said that aquaculture has existed for a long time and is a key economic sector of the locality. Therefore, Lap Le commune hopes that the aquaculture model will develop further. Currently, the commune has a product of brackish water black carp that meets the 3-star OCOP standard and is being guided by the authorities to become a 4-star OCOP product.

Talking about the role of water resources in aquaculture, Mr. Vu Van Da said that this is a very important factor. Because if the water source is clean, the fish will grow well, not get sick and increase productivity as well as quality, but if the water source is polluted, the fish will grow slowly and the quality will not be good, and the fish will even die in large numbers.

Mr. Pham Van Khai - Chairman of Lap Le Commune People's Committee said that every year, functional agencies such as the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also come to the locality to collect water samples for analysis. Then, the Departments will have recommendations for the commune to give direction and guidance to aquaculture households to ensure water hygiene for production development.

The results of the review at the end of 2023 showed that in Thuy Nguyen district, there are still 524 poor households, accounting for 0.47%; Near-poor households are 2,012 households, accounting for 1.80%. According to the review results and reports of the People's Committees of communes and towns, the number of households and population eligible to escape poverty and near-poverty in the second quarter of 2024: Poor households decreased by 292 households, with 704 people, a decrease of 0.26%; The number of remaining poor households at the beginning of the third quarter of 2024 was 232 households, with 504 people, a decrease of 0.21%. Thuy Nguyen district is continuing to implement the plan to implement poverty reduction and eradication policies in 2024, striving to continue to reduce the remaining poor households by 0.21% by the end of the third quarter of 2024 and complete the city's target of no more poor households in the district in 2024. At the same time, the district's near-poor household rate will decrease to 0.9% (equivalent to a 50% reduction for the whole year).
