On the afternoon of March 24, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Vice Chairman of Phong Dien District People's Committee, Can Tho City, said that the authorities are fixing the incident where a barge carrying rocks collided and caused the Nhiem Bridge to deviate on the afternoon of March 23.
Nhiem Bridge crosses the Can Tho River, located in Tan Thoi commune, Phong Dien district.
Hit by a barge carrying rocks, the two middle spans of Nhiem bridge buckled.
According to Mr. Thang, the collision did not cause serious damage. The district has worked with the barge owner to fix the damage. The barge owner will cover all costs of repairing the bridge, and it is expected that by tomorrow (March 25), vehicles will be able to circulate normally again.
"Currently, the traffic construction team is working to fix the problem. The deviated span will be lifted and pulled back to its original state, the quality of the bridge will not be affected," said Mr. Thang.
The two spans of the bridge are warped apart.
As reported by Giao Thong Newspaper, at around 6:00 p.m. on March 23, a barge carrying rocks was moving on the Can Tho River, heading from Phong Dien district to Ninh Kieu district.
When reaching Nhiem Bridge, due to high water, the cockpit of the barge got stuck in the water pipeline system running on the side of the bridge. The collision caused the iron frame protecting the pipeline to push into the main span of Nhiem Bridge, causing the bridge to shift about 10cm.
Only motorbikes are allowed to pass through Nhiem Bridge until repairs are completed, expected tomorrow, March 25.
The clean water pipeline installed parallel to the bridge was also affected by displacement.
After the incident, Phong Dien District authorities set up barriers at both ends of the bridge. On the morning of March 24, motorbikes were still able to travel through Nhiem Bridge normally, while cars and trucks were directed to take another route.
According to the reporter's investigation, the barge was transporting rocks to serve the provincial road 918 construction project in the district.
