Information technology students can contribute to open source software; participate in hypothetical projects... to gain experience when applying for jobs.
According to Mr. Nguyen Son Tung - Deputy Director of healthcare technology, medical equipment and life sciences in the North American market of FPT Software, when applying for jobs at technology companies, IT students need to have a profile recording the list of projects they have participated in. In the US, candidates often do this very well, including the name, description and link to the website building project or contribution to a certain open software project.

Even if you have not participated in any business before, young people can still build this list thanks to open source. These are source code software that allows users to download to use, modify or add some updates to some features.
There are many open source projects like this in the market today. For example, AI is a hot industry today. Experts and users often mention facial recognition algorithms. All of those algorithms are open source. Before the production units put them into use, a programmer wrote them and posted them publicly on open software.
When the demand is high, engineers will look for available solutions. While using the algorithm and seeing that it can be improved, programmers can modify it and submit requests for this open software to update. Over time, the algorithms available on open source will become better.
"You can participate in open source projects like this. That's the best way for employers to see your skills and expertise. This also shows that since you were a student, you have been proactive in doing projects, which is much more useful than the usual technical questions," he added.
In addition to open source, Son Tung also encourages students to participate in mock projects at university. He graduated from the 4th course of Software Engineering at FPT University. Here, the male engineer often works with real-life problems.
He shared that most of FPT University's lecturers are engineers working directly at technology companies or have their own businesses. Therefore, the exercises throughout the learning process are all practical problems, based on business projects.
In the third year, he continued to intern according to the school's program and had access to and worked directly on real projects of FPT Corporation.

However, Son Tung affirmed that to meet the demands of an increasingly demanding labor market, professional skills are not enough. Students need to improve their foreign languages to adapt to all working environments and access many sources of learning materials and knowledge around the world.
During his internship, he studied and completed the N3 Japanese certificate. Accordingly, the male engineer can use English and Japanese fluently. He also plans to learn Chinese to expand his knowledge, opportunities and relationships at work.
At the same time, Mr. Tung emphasized the importance of soft skills in the working process. Accordingly, when recruiting staff, he prioritizes candidates with good communication skills.
"For new candidates, with the specialized knowledge built from school, training is not difficult. Therefore, among many candidates, I appreciate those who can convey what they want in the job position and the company," he added.
The male engineer born in 1990 said that FPT University uses international curriculum in parallel with systematic soft skills teaching methods, so students do not have too much of a gap between the working and studying environment.
According to him, the difference between FPT University students and some other schools is that they have to present many times in each subject and mostly have to work in groups. This helps a lot in future work.
Currently, the 9x deputy director often has to communicate, present, and provide information about the company and its products to customers. In addition, whenever a customer asks a question and needs to know something about FPT Software, he has to make a proposal and convey to the partner what the company can do. Thus, the learning process at FPT University has helped him accumulate skills in creating visual images, presenting, and convincing others.
"Language is a tool. Communication is a skill. There are many people who are not good at foreign languages but communicate well, still express their own point of view, make the other person understand, and communicate on target and focus," Mr. Tung analyzed.

Thanks to the process of accumulating knowledge and skills at FPT University, after graduating, Son Tung joined FPT Software. During his career advancement, he said that he never had to go through a formal interview.
Instead, when working, with professional competence and good communication skills, the male engineer is ready to demonstrate his own value, ability and desire. Whenever a new position is needed, the leader will remember him and evaluate whether he is suitable or not. At that time, he also frankly shares what he wants, what he can do for that position, what is lacking and what aspects he needs to add.
From his own experience, Son Tung advises young people to be proactive in learning new things right from the first days of studying at university. The potential of the industry is growing, IT is present in all fields, helping to increase productivity and reduce costs. Accordingly, the opportunity for young people to find suitable jobs is very high.
"At the present stage, people often ask whether there is still a place for IT human resources when AI is becoming more and more popular. However, it is also a tool for human resources to increase productivity for the IT industry itself, reducing costs for many jobs, in many fields," the former student of FPT University added.
