The Guardian newspaper reported on February 11 that Google's online and mobile calendars will no longer display events such as Black History Month, Women's History Month, and LGBTQ+ holidays, among others.

Google's controversial change

The world's largest search engine has previously marked the start of Black History Month (February) and Pride Month (June), but those events will no longer appear in Google Calendar starting this year.

The removal of these holidays was first reported by The Verge last week.

Google spokesperson Madison Cushman Veld told the Guardian the reason they removed these events from Google Calendar was because they were no longer “sustainable” for the business’s growth model.

"In previous years, the Google Calendar team started manually adding many cultural events around the world. However, we received a lot of feedback that we were missing many country events.

Therefore, manually updating and maintaining hundreds of events and ensuring global consistency is not feasible, nor is it sustainable," the statement said.

"So starting in mid-2024, we've agreed to only show public holidays and anniversaries from timeanddate.com. Users can add dates that are important to them to their own Google Calendar," Google said.

Many users have expressed disappointment and anger at Google's move. With these changes, users who want to track events like LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Black History Month, and Indigenous People's Month will now have to add them to their calendars themselves.

New decisions under Trump

Google's move to stop recognizing holidays for the black, LGBTQ+ and women's communities is the latest in a series of changes by the company since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

With the change to its Calendar app, Google confirmed to the Guardian that this will not affect future Google Doodles.

Google Doodle refers to the characteristic drawings that often appear on the Google homepage to celebrate important cultural events.

“Google will continue to actively celebrate and promote cultural events in its publications,” the company said, citing YouTube Music, for example, which maintains a special playlist for Black History Month.

In addition to the above change, the tech giant also recently announced that it would withdraw its previous commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in its hiring policies, after Mr. Trump ordered restrictions on DEI programs in federal agencies early in his term.

In late January, Google also announced to users in the US that they would see "Gulf of Mexico" renamed "Gulf of America" and would begin reusing the name "McKinley" instead of "Denali" for the mountain in Alaska.

These changes were made after Mr. Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office, and Google officially updated the new name for users in the US on February 10.
