Thien Tan: Preserving the beauty of Cao Lan ethnic culture

Cao Lan people, Thien Tan commune, Huu Lung district perform at the opening ceremony of the practical teaching class, performing Sinh Ca singing.

The San Chay ethnic group (including two branches, Cao Lan and San Chi) mainly live in some communes of Loc Binh and Huu Lung districts. In particular, the place with the largest concentration of Cao Lan people is Thien Tan commune, Huu Lung district with 363 households and over 1,600 people. Currently, the Cao Lan people here still preserve many unique traditional cultural features such as: Sinh Ca folk songs, antiphonal singing, traditional costumes... Especially the language, writing (Han Nom characters)...

In recent years, it is not difficult to come to Thien Tan to see images of women, including school-age children, in traditional Cao Lan costumes performing at anniversary events and festivals of units in the commune.

Ms. Nong Thi Loan, Head of Minh Tien Village, Thien Tan Commune, said: The village currently has over 300 people, of which 12% are Cao Lan people. Every year, villagers are regularly encouraged to wear traditional costumes, especially in events such as weddings, engagements, festivals, etc. In particular, in the village today there are artisans who still preserve the language, writing and traditional customs of "Giui dat" (this is an important ritual in funerals) only found in Cao Lan people, contributing significantly to the restoration and preservation of cultural heritages in the area.

To achieve these results, for many years, the Party Committee and the communal government have made efforts to implement many solutions to preserve and promote the cultural values of the Cao Lan ethnic group.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loi, Chairman of Thien Tan Commune People's Committee, said: In recent years, the Party Committee and the communal government have promoted the dissemination of the Party's directives and resolutions, the State's policies and laws on preserving and promoting traditional cultural values of ethnic groups; promoting the role of prestigious people in propagating and preserving national cultural identity. Through specific actions, the Party Committee, the communal government and mass organizations have promoted and mobilized people to preserve and promote cultural values such as language, writing, ethnic costumes and good, civilized customs, which are traditional beauty... In addition, the communal People's Committee has also proactively proposed the District People's Committee and relevant agencies to collect the language, writing, and folk songs of the Cao Lan people to serve the work of traditional education in the coming time...

Accordingly, in August 2021, the People's Committee of Huu Lung district issued a decision to establish the Cao Lan Sinh Ca Club in Thien Tan commune. Meritorious Artisan Ninh Xuan Nhat, the instructor and manager of the Club, shared: The Club currently has nearly 20 members. For the Club to operate effectively, we regularly contact artisans inside and outside the province to collect documents and restore traditional folk melodies. Club members regularly practice and exchange experiences in performing Sinh Ca. At the same time, members also actively teach their children and grandchildren the traditional language and melodies.

Promoting the achieved results, recently, on July 5, 2024, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province coordinated with the People's Committee of Huu Lung district and the People's Committee of Thien Tan commune to open a class to teach and perform Sinh Ca singing. The class had 33 participants, mainly students in the commune. The students were taught and guided on basic techniques about the meaning, process, and methods of practicing and performing Sinh Ca singing in particular, and folk dances and folk music of the Cao Lan people in general.

By many ways of preserving traditional culture, the Cao Lan people in Thien Tan have contributed to improving their spiritual life, effectively implementing the movement "All people unite to build a cultural life" at the grassroots level. In the past 3 years, 13/13 villages of the commune have met cultural standards; in 2023, the whole commune had 88.8% of households (1,290/1,453) meeting cultural standards, an increase of 1% compared to 2022...

Mr. Khong Hong Minh, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Huu Lung district said: “Thien Tan is a commune with a large population of Cao Lan people. This is also one of the typical communes of the district in the work of preserving and promoting ethnic cultural identity. In order to promote the traditional cultural values of the Cao Lan people, in the coming time, the department will continue to advise the District People's Committee to strengthen propaganda and raise people's awareness of the importance of preserving traditional cultural values, especially researching and building more clubs to preserve and promote ethnic identity values in the commune".
