Oil prices fell 7% and closed at their lowest level in more than three years as China increased tariffs on US goods, Reuters reported.
China, the world's top oil importer, said it would impose an additional 34% tariff on all US goods starting April 10. Countries around the world have been preparing plans after Trump raised tariffs to the highest level in more than a century.
Commodities including natural gas, soybeans and gold also fell sharply, while global stock markets plunged. Investment bank JPMorgan said it now sees a 60% chance of a global recession by the end of the year, up from 40% previously.
Global benchmark Brent crude futures fell $4.56, or 6.5%, to $65.58 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell $4.96, or 7.4%, to close at $61.99.
At its session low, Brent fell to $64.03 and WTI hit a four-year low of $60.45. For the week, Brent fell 10.9%, its biggest weekly percentage drop in a year and a half, while WTI posted its biggest weekly percentage drop in two years, falling 10.6%.
"Crude oil prices are probably close to fair value to me until we get some indication of how much demand has actually dropped. I think WTI is likely to be in the $50 to $55 range for the foreseeable future," said energy expert Scott Shelton of United ICAP, warning that demand will fall in the current market environment.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said in a speech that pointed to tough decisions ahead for the U.S. central bank, President Trump's new tariffs are larger than expected and the economic consequences, including higher inflation and slower growth, are likely to be as well.
