The stable price level for many consecutive days shows that the market is still in a waiting state before the upcoming peak harvest season.

In a notable development, Indonesia is actively expanding its durian growing area and completing the necessary legal procedures to export to China. This move is expected to open a new era for the country's durian industry, while creating more choices for Chinese consumers - the world's largest durian consumer market.

Chinese customs officials arrived in Indonesia last week to inspect plantations and packing facilities. If they meet the requirements, Indonesia could soon be granted permission to export frozen durian, which is cheaper and poses fewer food safety risks than fresh durian.

According to Indonesian media, the government has designated 422 villages nationwide to focus on developing durian, with the aim of boosting output for export.

Thailand is currently the largest supplier of durian to China, accounting for 57% of the total import value of more than $6.99 billion last year. Vietnam is second with 38%, followed by the Philippines and Malaysia.

Indonesia’s entry into the Chinese market – albeit with frozen products at first – has already caught the attention of Chinese consumers. With fresh durians selling for up to 200 yuan (about $27.7) in China for a 6kg fruit, expectations of a cheaper Indonesian option are well-founded.

However, experts say Indonesia will face many challenges, especially in terms of supply capacity, quality and China's strict phytosanitary standards.

Indonesia is currently the largest durian producer in Southeast Asia, with about 2 million tons of durian harvested each year. If exports are favorable, this will be a formidable competitor to Vietnam and Thailand in this segment.
