Pig price increases, supply is still guaranteed

Việt NamViệt Nam16/01/2025

Currently, the price of live pigs in localities tends to increase. According to the Department of Livestock Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, some of the main reasons for the increase in the price of live pigs are that near the Lunar New Year, the demand for food products, including pork, increases; processing enterprises increase the purchase of pigs to serve the production of processed foods for the Tet holiday.

Pig price increases, supply is still guaranteed With a pig farming scale of over 200 pigs/batch (2 batches/year), Mr. Nguyen Tien Quyen's family in zone 9, Minh Luong commune, Doan Hung district earned over 2 billion VND last year.

Pig farming in provinces with large-scale farming has decreased due to the time of herd restoration around July-August, farmers suffer losses; storm YAGI caused heavy damage to many farms, making herd restoration difficult; demand for imported pigs from China is high; African swine fever is still complicated in many localities, making farmers hesitant to restore herds... In addition, large livestock corporations CP, Dabaco... have also simultaneously increased prices, causing farms and livestock facilities to also increase prices.

In early December, the farm system of Mr. Ha Quyet Thang's family in Dong Co area, Thuc Luyen commune, Thanh Son district had over 250 pigs ready for sale. When notified, some traders quickly contacted to place orders, so his family did not have to worry about output like previous years. The joy was multiplied when the price of live pigs at this time could be said to be the highest in the past 4-5 years. With about 500 pigs, of which 250 were sold, Mr. Thang's family earned nearly 1.8 billion VND, after deducting expenses, his family also had a profit of over 450 million VND.

Mr. Thang shared: "Since the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs has always remained high, from 64,000 VND/kg or more, especially from the beginning of December 2024 until now, the price of live pigs at large farms like our family is 70,000 VND/kg; and at small-scale farms, the price is about 67,000-68,000 VND/kg or 74,000-75,000 VND/kg depending on the farming method and pig code. In addition, since the beginning of the year, the price of bran has also decreased from 350-1,000 VND/kg depending on the type, which also helps farmers like us reduce costs and increase profits."

Pig price increases, supply is still guaranteed The increase in live pig prices has also caused pork prices in traditional markets to increase at the end of the year.

The increase in live hog prices has also caused pork prices at traditional markets to increase slightly compared to the end of November 2024. At some markets in Viet Tri city, the price of pork belly is at 150,000 VND/kg; baby back ribs are priced at 160,000 VND/kg; lean loin and lean pork are priced at around 140,000-145,000 VND/kg... an increase of 4,000-5,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, at supermarkets such as Winmart; CoopMart, Go... pork prices remain at the same level, ranging from 165,000 to 195,000 VND/kg depending on the type.

According to experts from sectors such as Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development, the price of live pigs is likely to remain high until the end of the first quarter of 2025. However, the pork market for Tet holiday nationwide is still abundant, so consumers can be completely assured.

Currently, Phu Tho's total pig herd is over 768,000, of which farming in the farm and enterprise system accounts for about 41% of the total herd. The good news for the livestock industry in the province is that the number of small-scale livestock households has decreased quite sharply (down 19,000 households compared to 2023, of which the number of pig farming households has decreased by about 8,000 households). At the same time, in the past year, the well-controlled epidemic situation in livestock farming has helped the livestock industry account for a high proportion in the overall structure of the agricultural sector.

Mr. Hoang Manh Thong - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said: Although the price of live pigs has increased recently, farmers should not rush to re-herd or increase their herds. To ensure production efficiency, farmers need to closely monitor market demand. At the same time, when re-herding, they need to choose to buy breeding animals at reputable, licensed establishments. Farmers also need to proactively vaccinate their livestock to protect their livestock in general and pigs in particular; supplement vitamins to increase the resistance of livestock and poultry in the cold season; when detecting signs of disease in livestock, they need to promptly notify specialized agencies; do not hide epidemics, sell sick livestock... to ensure safety in the livestock sector.
