According to the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), as of February 2025, the total pig herd in the country is over 30 million, an increase of 3.7%. However, according to a survey by Dan Viet, due to many different reasons, currently, live pigs are very scarce, many traders are "hoarding goods" and transporting pigs from the North to the South for consumption.

According to the report of the Department of Animal Husbandry, as of February 2025, the total pig herd in the country reached over 30 million, an increase of 3.7%. However, on February 12, a survey by Dan Viet at the Ha Nam livestock and poultry wholesale market and pig buyers all said that the supply of live pigs is very scarce.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen The Chinh - Head of the Ha Nam livestock and poultry wholesale market management board said that on the morning of February 12, the number of pigs coming to the market stopped at 400-500 pigs, equivalent to about 50-60 tons, only 1/10 compared to the time before Tet and 1/5 compared to other normal days. The price of pigs at the market was traded at 72,000 - 74,000 VND/kg.

Explaining the reason why there are few live pigs in the market and the price is currently high, Mr. Chinh said that the total pig herd in the country has decreased sharply due to the impact of storm No. 3 in September 2024, causing heavy damage to many farms. In addition, the foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever epidemics in October and November 2024, after supplying a large output to the market during Tet.

“Usually, after Tet, live pigs are transported from the South to the North for sale, but this year, traders from the South are going to the North to buy. In addition, pigs weighing more than 100kg are also very scarce, only pigs weighing 100kg or less are available, so the already-short supply is even more inadequate,” Mr. Chinh informed.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Do Van Khanh - a pig trader in Tuyen Quang said that after Tet, the pig purchasing situation is also facing difficulties when the supply is very low. Today (February 12), he only bought 100 pigs, only 1/3 of the usual price. The price of pigs in Tuyen Quang is also very high, from 71,000 - 72,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Khanh also informed that many traders are rushing to buy live pigs to transport to the southern provinces for consumption, due to the shortage of supply there. At the same time, some traders are also "hoarding goods", waiting for prices to go up before selling.

Confirming with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, said that currently the supply of live pigs in the southern provinces is in short supply and the price of live pigs is high. Today (February 12), in some places the price of live pigs has reached 75,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Doan, currently, there is a situation of traders transporting pigs from the North to the South for consumption.

Mr. Doan said that the shortage of supply was due to the African swine fever epidemic at the end of 2024, which affected the pig herd. Along with that, the high demand for Tet also contributed to the shortage after Tet. Mr. Doan cited that at Tan Xuan wholesale market (Hoc Mon) and Binh Dien (District 8, Ho Chi Minh City), about 7,000 pigs were consumed each day, but now the number coming to the market has decreased by 50%, to about 3,000-3,500 pigs.

However, Mr. Doan said that although the output of live pigs at this time has decreased compared to the same period in 2024 and previous years, it is predicted that the shortage of live pigs will not last long and the price will not increase to 100,000 VND/kg like in 2020.

"Currently, we have many large livestock enterprises. They are proactive in breeding animals and have modern livestock farming processes. If the number of pigs in households decreases, the enterprises will have plans to adjust to promptly supply pork to the market," said Mr. Doan.

On the morning of February 12, responding to Dan Viet, Mr. Duong Tat Thang - Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry affirmed: "The current shortage of live pigs is only local. Due to the increased demand for meat from people before, during and after Tet, high prices, so businesses and pig farmers have sold pigs to meet market demand, leading to a decrease in the total herd."

Mr. Thang also said that the current shortage of live pigs will not affect the consumer price index (CPI). "The current high pork price will be difficult to maintain for long because the total domestic pig herd is still basically meeting domestic demand with more than 30 million pigs," Mr. Thang affirmed.
