The whole Gia Lai village raises swallows, which are billion-dollar birds. Just look out into the yard and you'll see the billionaire farmer.

In 2022, Pho Yen Cooperative (Thang Loi 3 village, Ia Sol commune, Phu Thien district, Gia Lai province) began to build a "swallow village" model with many swallow houses (raising swallows for bird's nests) that were systematically and scientifically planned. This "billion-dollar bird" swallow village model is initially bringing high economic efficiency.

Success from the "swallow village" model

Mr. Hoang Thanh Tung - Director of Pho Yen Cooperative - said: In 2020, he saw that in Phu Thien district there were many swiftlets but there were only 7 swiftlet houses in the area.

People built houses to raise swiftlets spontaneously and on a small scale. From there, he came up with the idea of building a “swallow village” to develop a concentrated model of raising swiftlets.

Before doing so, he and his colleagues traveled to Indonesia and Malaysia to meet with industry experts to learn how to build a bird's nest house.

“In 2022, I started building the first “swallow village” model in Thang Loi 3 village. Currently, the cooperative has developed 2 “swallow villages” in Thong Nhat village (Ia Peng commune) and Thang Loi 3 village with a total of 17 swallow houses.

The bird's nest house system is built in a modern style, applying standardized care processes, ensuring the production of pure, nutritious and absolutely safe bird's nests.

Although newly put into operation, the birdhouses have harvested 2-5 kg of raw bird nests per month. With a price of about 18 million VND/kg, after deducting expenses, members earn 20-40 million VND/month" - Mr. Tung shared.

Pho Yen Cooperative is considered a typical unit in developing bird's nest house models and deep processing of bird's nest products.

After synchronizing the technical process of raising swiftlets, the cooperative can easily obtain certificates of food safety and environmental hygiene to connect with trade and export products.

In addition, the cooperative also builds a team of general technical service staff to reduce costs for members in maintaining and servicing birdhouses.

Normally, a birdhouse that does not participate in the cooperative costs about 2 million VND/100 m2 of floor to maintain, while a birdhouse in the cooperative only costs about 500 thousand VND. Because of the joint investment, the cooperative always has a source of spare equipment ready for repair and maintenance so as not to affect the bird's habitat.

In addition, when participating in the cooperative, members are guaranteed a stable output for their products; they are consulted and supported with legal procedures related to the construction, operation and exploitation of birdhouses. All birdhouses in the "birdhouse village" are registered for environmental protection in accordance with the law.

Cooperative members are provided with free technical advice and guidance when implementing the construction and expansion of birdhouse areas. In particular, the Cooperative also creates conditions for members to participate in investing in the deep processing chain of bird's nests.

“The cooperative has 2 products recognized as 3-star OCOP: Ricky Fams raw bird’s nest and Ricky Fams premium bird’s nest. It can be affirmed that the quality and nutritional content of bird’s nest in Gia Lai is not inferior to that of other regions,” Mr. Tung emphasized.

Linking to develop the bird's nest farming profession

To expand the scale of Pho Yen Cooperative, Mr. Tung has brought households and individuals who are raising swiftlets to participate in the “swallow village” model and transferred technology to increase profits. Currently, in addition to the 2 “swallow villages”, the Cooperative is cooperating with 48 households in Phu Thien, Ia Pa, and Duc Co districts to develop 35 swiftlet houses.

Mr. Hoang Van Son - Member of Pho Yen Cooperative - said: After visiting the swallow farming model of Pho Yen Cooperative, he realized that the locality has a lot of potential and advantages to develop the swallow farming profession, so he decided to spend more than 1 billion VND to invest.

“In 2022, I joined Pho Yen Cooperative. Compared to individual investment, joining the cooperative will ensure a higher probability of success because the indicators of bird's nest farming are all based on scientific analysis.

In addition, the family learned more experience and techniques in taking care of swiftlets, and the output of the products was also more stable. Each month, the family harvested about 2 kg of raw bird's nest. With the current price of bird's nest, the family also has an income of about 30 million VND/month" - Mr. Son shared.

Mr. Tran Van Diep (Thang Loi 1 village, Ia Sol commune) said: “In 2023, I will cooperate with Pho Yen Cooperative to invest in building birdhouses and consuming products. Although raising swiftlets does not require much care and food, the initial investment cost is very high, from 800 million VND to 1 billion VND.

In addition, the profession of raising swiftlets also requires a good grasp of technical processes such as: deodorizing, creating humidity in the house, building directions for the birdhouse...

When I joined Pho Yen Cooperative, I was given technical guidance, a contract for maintenance and upkeep of birdhouses, and product consumption at a price of 15-18 million VND/kg of raw bird's nests.

Regarding the development orientation of expanding the "swallow village", the Director of Pho Yen Cooperative said: The Cooperative plans to develop 5 "swallow villages" in Phu Thien district with a scale of 23-35 bird houses/village. Of which, Ia Sol commune is expected to have 2 "swallow villages" and Ia Piar, Ia Peng, and Chu A Thai communes each have 1 "swallow village".

At the same time, the Cooperative is building a chain of links associated with the consumption of specialized products from bird's nests in the direction of macrobiotics by investing in an automatic sterilization filling and packaging line to target customers with special health care needs and expand exports after achieving ISO 22000 and HACCP Codex standards. Currently, 30 members have registered to participate in this program.

In addition, the cooperative will develop a model of raising swiftlets combined with experiential tourism. Currently, the “swallow village” has an area of 7.5 hectares, where the cooperative combines raising swiftlets with raising ostriches, spotted deer, and civets.

According to Mr. Tung: Every year, Phu Thien district organizes a rain-praying festival at the Plei Oi National Historical-Cultural Relic Site, where the legend of the Fire King is very famous. Through the festival, more tourists will come to Plei Oi. At that time, the "swallow village" will be the connecting point for tourists to visit and experience.

To attract tourists, the "swallow village" is designed with many eye-catching landscapes such as: a lake located in a green campus, a resort, miniature landscape, a bird's nest processing workshop...

Coming here, visitors can stay, immerse themselves in the natural landscape, and at the same time buy the best bird's nest products. Visitors can even exchange technical information and transfer methods of raising and processing bird's nest products.

“This is a beneficial activity for Phu Thien tourism, and at the same time promotes the Phu Thien bird’s nest product brand. It not only helps bring quality products to consumers but also contributes to diversifying the district’s tourism types,” Mr. Tung affirmed.

Mr. Mai Ngoc Quy - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Thien district (Gia Lai province): In Phu Thien district, there are about 145 bird nest farms. In particular, for Pho Yen Cooperative, in addition to linking members in concentrated bird nest farming, it also links with households in production and product consumption.

The district also orients the cooperative to continue expanding its links and building a factory to deeply process products from bird's nests to aim for sustainable development of the bird's nest farming profession and build the Phu Thien bird's nest brand.
