Samsung is said to be aiming to make the Galaxy Z Fold7 thinner while still supporting the S Pen like the newly launched Z Fold Special Edition. Accordingly, the company will remove the traditional digitizer - the main component responsible for enabling pen input.
The digitizer is used to enable electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology, which has been a part of the Galaxy Z Fold series since the Galaxy Z Fold3. It creates an electric field on the display, allowing for precise pen input without the need for a battery. However, this technology adds to the thickness of the device, forcing a trade-off between pen input and thinness.
Industry sources revealed: Samsung Electronics is actively considering applications of digitizer-free pen input technology for the Z Fold7. This will be a strategy to make the foldable phone thinner - a priority in the competitive market of this product.
To solve this problem, Samsung is looking at new technology similar to Apple’s Active Electrostatic (AES) method. AES moves the technology from the main screen to the pen—the pen has a small battery and electronics that generate the necessary electrical input. This may make the pen thicker and require charging, but it allows for a thinner phone body.
The source also revealed that this technology will be first applied to the Galaxy Z Fold7 model launched next year.
