Within the framework of the Canada – Vietnam AI Summit recently held, FPT and Mila - the world's leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institute signed a 3-year cooperation agreement to build an AI strategy and responsibility framework, ensuring ethics in research, development and application of this technology.
The conference took place in Quebec (Canada), the headquarters of the Mila AI Research Institute, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada. The event attracted nearly 200 scientists and senior leaders of major corporations and companies in the North American region.
In the context of AI increasingly penetrating and dominating all aspects of life, the guests discussed topics that are of interest to the whole world such as: "How to build social ethics when using AI?" "Responsibility in using AI to not turn this technology into a danger to humans." Many new perspectives and many future technology trends were presented by senior leaders and scientists in the discussion sessions at the Conference.
According to Professor Yoshua Bengio, Founder of the Mila AI Research Institute, ethics and social responsibility help AI to "integrate" into life, but to promote AI to continue to develop more strongly, there must be legal barriers in its application in real life. But before the law can create change, education is the fastest and most sustainable tool for humans to accompany AI. For Professor Yoshua Bengio, in order for the next generations to acquire the most applied scientific knowledge, scientists and educators can create basic knowledge, divided into classes to apply to teaching from a young age. Professor Yoshua Bengio also affirmed that the most important thing is to use AI responsibly and safely.
Sharing about the cooperation agreement with FPT, Professor Yoshua Bengio said, “The cooperation with FPT is a testament to the international impact that Mila can create. Over the past three years, the cooperation has brought many meaningful values to the Mila community, contributing to the realization of many scientific projects. We are very pleased to continue the cooperation with FPT, one of our major partners in Asia.”
Sharing at the Conference, FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh said: "As a global technology company, FPT wishes to join forces with cutting-edge AI intelligence for a safer, better and happier world." At the same time, Mr. Binh also argued that scientists and technology researchers need to have global agreements on the responsibility of using AI. For him, education can be a solid springboard to train learners in creativity, the ability to debate and criticize issues to always have an objective perspective.
Mr. Truong Gia Binh emphasized that AI can be a companion, bringing happiness to every person. For example, AI can bring about medical equality by distributing medicine evenly to patients, from cities to rural areas, as Long Chau Pharmacy has done. Right in each family, AI can be applied to analyze energy consumption data in the house and propose energy-saving measures with FPT Smart Home. According to Mr. Binh, the great goal of technology in general or Artificial Intelligence in particular is to go hand in hand, bringing joy and happiness to human life.
The contents discussed at the event are also the goals that both FPT and Mila are aiming for in the future. Within the framework of the event, the two sides reached an agreement on the second 3-year cooperation.
Under this three-year partnership, with Mila’s advice, FPT will pioneer the development of a Responsible AI framework. This framework sets out conventions to ensure that AI is developed and deployed in a way that benefits the community, respects human values, and meets ethical and legal standards.
Once completed, this framework will be applied in AI projects with FPT’s global customers. In addition, it will also contribute to shaping responsible and ethical decisions of FPT engineers, interns, and programming students when implementing and designing AI solutions.
According to the agreement, FPT and Mila will also collaborate on research projects related to large language models (LLM) and natural language processing (NLP). At the same time, Mila will continue to support FPT in training talents in the field of AI, following the previous achievements of the AI Residency program jointly implemented by both parties.
In June 2020, FPT became the first technology corporation to become Mila's strategic partner in Southeast Asia. After 3 years of cooperation, the two sides have leveraged each other's strengths to jointly research and improve AI technology capabilities, while also training a generation of talented people with international-level capabilities.
