According to reports, more customers are opting for iPhone models with lower storage capacities than before, a trend that has sparked much debate about the real reason behind the change.
Specifically, in the fourth quarter of 2024, 44% of iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max buyers chose to upgrade to a model with more storage, down from 48% of iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max buyers in the same period a year earlier. For iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, only 42% of buyers chose the higher storage version, down from 48% of iPhone 15 and 15 Plus a year ago. This shows that customers are gradually abandoning the trend of buying iPhones with large storage capacity.
Why low capacity iPhones are popular
There are several factors that could explain this change. First of all, the price of iPhone models with more storage capacity is often significantly higher. When the economy is tough or budgets are limited, many people tend to choose lower capacity versions to save money, while also taking advantage of cloud storage services such as iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox.
The base storage capacity of most current iPhone models is 128 GB. The iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at 256 GB, while the iPhone SE only has 64 GB. For higher-end models, users can upgrade to 512 GB or even 1 TB for an additional fee of a few million VND. The problem is that this storage upgrade is not always necessary for the vast majority of users, especially when they already have online storage solutions available.
In addition, the development of technology also contributes to this trend. Chips and operating systems are increasingly optimizing data management, helping devices operate smoothly even with more modest storage capacity. Data compression algorithms and smart memory management capabilities on iOS also help minimize memory overload.
Meanwhile, the demand for cloud storage services is increasing. Platforms like iCloud allow users to access data from anywhere with an internet connection, thereby reducing dependence on the phone's internal memory.
The change reflects an evolution in technology and consumer habits. The gradual shift to lower internal storage could impact Apple’s business strategy. The company could continue to push cloud storage services to offset revenue from higher-capacity iPhone models. At the same time, Apple should consider adjusting prices to better match market demand.
