According to the 2018 General Education Program applied at the high school level for the past 2 years, from grade 10, students have been able to choose elective subjects related to their future career orientation. Therefore, to prepare students with a foundation of knowledge as well as the opportunity to choose a suitable career, high schools have built a scientific and appropriate combination.
INCREASE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO CHOOSE THEIR FAVORITE SUBJECTS
It is expected that in mid-April, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will announce the enrollment quota for grade 10 for the 2024-2025 school year.
Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1) plans to enroll 17 10th graders (including 2 integrated English classes) with a total of 745 students. At the same time, the school has also developed 5 elective subject combinations for parents to refer to and learn about before choosing their children's wishes. Accordingly, the school has combinations such as physics, chemistry, informatics, biology or geography; physics, chemistry, informatics, economic education and law or technology... Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of the school, said that the school built the combination based on the university admission criteria according to the traditional exam block and the capacity assessment framework of universities.
Grade 9 students in Ho Chi Minh City will take the grade 10 exam in early June this year.
Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City) plans to enroll 17 10th graders with 695 students, including 10 regular classes, 2 integrated English classes, and 5 specialized classes in math, physics, chemistry, literature, and English. Compared to the 2023-2024 school year, the enrollment target for specialized and integrated 10th graders in the next school year is stable, while the target for regular 10th graders is expected to decrease by 2 classes.
Mr. Phung Nhat Anh, Vice Principal of Nguyen Huu Huan High School, said that the organization of elective subjects in the next school year will be adjusted by the school compared to the 2023-2024 school year, in order to increase the opportunity for students to choose their favorite subjects. Accordingly, in addition to designing 7 groups of elective subjects, including: physics, chemistry, biology, informatics; physics, chemistry, biology, technology; physics, chemistry, biology, economics..., this year the school plans to build two subject groups with art (music).
Similarly, in the 2024-2025 school year, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) plans to enroll 16 10th graders, including 5 specialized classes in math, physics, chemistry, literature, and English, reducing 3 regular 10th graders compared to the previous school year.
Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, said that the school does not have pre-established subject groups, but students and parents choose subjects themselves, except for fine arts and music because there are no teachers. Based on the selection results, the school organizes classes to solve the learning problems in each subject chosen by students.
CHANGE THE WAY TO CHOOSE YOUR 10TH GRADE ENTRANCE OPTIONS
Ms. Bui Minh Tam, Principal of Le Quy Don High School (District 3), shared that in the past, parents often only chose public grade 10 students based on the standard score that was suitable for their learning ability and the quality of education at the school. Therefore, parents often tended to choose high schools with good training quality. However, in the context of high schools implementing the 2018 General Education Program, the above selection trend is no longer suitable.
According to the Principal of Le Quy Don High School, currently, depending on the characteristics of the facilities, teaching staff resources and educational goals of each high school, the organization of the selected subjects will be different, no school is the same as another school. Therefore, when choosing a 10th grade student, in addition to the factors of learning capacity and training performance of the desired high school, parents need to learn more about the organization of the selected subjects of the school, the educational environment of the school to see if it is suitable for the career orientation that the student and his/her family are aiming for or not.
FACTORS FOR CHOOSING YOUR WISHES
According to the assessment of the leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, from the reality of the 2023 - 2024 school year, it shows that many parents and grade 9 students have not yet thoroughly researched the 2018 General Education Program at the high school level during the process of registering for grade 10 for their children. This leads to a situation where when entering school, there are no groups of subjects to choose from as the family wishes; or during the learning process, students want to change because they do not match their abilities and strengths.

Parents submit their application for admission to grade 10 for their children for the 2023-2024 school year. Choosing a subject combination is an important step when entering grade 10 according to the 2018 General Education Program.
To be able to register NV accurately, according to Ms. Nguyen Xuan Mai, Deputy Head of the Examination Department of the Department of Education and Training, parents need to choose a high school near their home, a school that is suitable for the student's learning ability. To find a school that is suitable for their learning ability, it is necessary to rely on the benchmark scores of the schools in the last 3 years, compared with the learning results of each student.
Ms. Mai said that every year, when registering for NV, many parents do not pay attention to the distance from home to school. After being admitted, the distance to school every day is too far, which will also affect the student's learning results.
In addition, each high school will have a teaching plan that is appropriate to the ability of the incoming students. If the school chosen is not suitable for the learning ability, assuming that the student is admitted, he or she may encounter difficulties in keeping up with his or her friends because his or her learning ability is not up to par, thereby affecting his or her learning results.
In particular, Ms. Nguyen Xuan Mai noted that currently, high school has implemented the 2018 General Education Program, so from the beginning of the 10th grade school year, students must choose a combination of 4 subjects from 9 subjects according to their abilities and interests associated with their career orientation. Therefore, from the time of choosing NV, parents and students need to carefully learn about the school's organization of the group of optional subjects. Avoid the case where, after being admitted, they discover that the school does not teach the optional subject they want, leading to an impact on their learning outcomes.
"Parents need to accompany and closely monitor their children to know what subjects they are good at, what career fields they are inclined to, and from there, suggest suitable and accurate choices for their children. In addition, parents need to listen to what their children want, avoid imposing their wishes on their children, which will create pressure for them. Students also need to consult with their homeroom teachers and subject teachers because teachers understand their abilities best," Ms. Nguyen Xuan Mai advised.
Mr. Pham Quang Cuong, Vice Principal of Tay Thanh High School (Tan Phu District), said that the 2018 General Education Program is favorable for each high school to create its own unique features through the organization of elective subjects as well as educational activities. The quality of education is not only reflected in educational results but also in the training environment, playgrounds, and educational activities for students to develop comprehensively. Therefore, before registering for NV, parents and students should spend time learning about the school, avoiding choosing based on emotions.
Department of Education and Training builds data for parents and students to refer to
To address the limitations in NV registration, when preparing for this year's 10th grade entrance exam, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training built a website that centralizes enrollment data of high schools, supporting parents and students in the NV registration process, aiming to help students choose the NV that best suits their abilities as well as career orientation.
Mr. Nguyen Vo Dang Khoa, Deputy Head of the Department of Examinations of the Department of Education and Training, specifically informed that the website provides information on the quotas and methods of organizing the group of elective subjects for grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year of each high school; at the same time, it provides the standard scores for grade 10 of each school in the last 3 school years along with images of the educational environment of each school... for parents to refer to. In addition, it will also provide the contact phone number of the admissions consulting department of each high school so that parents can proactively contact when they need advice and answers.
