The French government has just announced a new plan to better regulate the number of tourists, seen as a solution to the problem of overcrowding during the summer tourist season.

In an interview with Le Figaro newspaper, Tourism Minister Olivia Gregoire said Paris will set up a monitoring group to identify the most “at-risk” tourist destinations, and develop strategies to encourage tourism during the low season.

Despite being one of the most visited destinations in the world, France has yet to issue warnings to tourists about the risks of traveling during peak season; propaganda has directed tourists to less well-known destinations. Therefore, the government will work closely with local authorities to increase coverage of information about other tourist destinations in France, as well as “take advantage” of social media influencers to promote, encourage tourists to explore new destinations or take trips outside the peak summer months.

French government statistics show that 80% of tourism activities are concentrated in only 20% of the country's territory. To reduce the burden on tourist destinations - which have been over-promoted - the government needs to launch promotional programs for other tourist routes. In the immediate future, the government will launch a campaign in English and other languages to promote four-season tourism across the country. France is expected to welcome about 37 million tourists this year.

Tourism has long been a major contributor to the French economy. After more than two years of stagnation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism activities have become vibrant again. Many visitors to famous tourist destinations in France (such as the abbey island of Mont-Saint-Michel in the Normandy region) were surprised by the large number of tourists flocking there. Meanwhile, at the beach of Etretat in the same region, during peak season, up to 10,000 tourists come every day.
