Vietnam Team: Don't let the fans turn their backs!
Báo Thanh niên•24/03/2024
After the recent consecutive failures of the Vietnam national team under coach Troussier, what worries many people the most is not the fate of the French coach but the indifference and turning of backs of Vietnamese football fans towards the national team.
In recent comments on Thanh Nien Newspaper, many readers said that they are no longer interested in the upcoming matches of the Vietnamese team, regardless of the results. This was also clearly shown on the evening of the first leg match between Indonesia and Vietnam, when the atmosphere in coffee shops in Ho Chi Minh City was quite deserted, with few football fans, quite different from 2-3 years ago when the shops were always crowded with people, with national flags flying everywhere, and the cheers of fans.

A small survey in Thanh Nien Newspaper alone showed that out of 1,688 people polled (up to 6pm on March 23) about the result of the second leg match between Vietnam and Indonesia at My Dinh Stadium, 1,115 people thought that Vietnam would lose. Only 381 people thought that Vietnam would win and 192 people chose a draw. From the above facts, it is clear that Vietnamese football fans have been very disappointed with the performance of Vietnam under Coach Troussier over the past time. They are frustrated with the playing style and feel frustrated with the way Vietnam lost to opponents, because these teams are not much better than us. Another thing that leads to fans turning their backs on the team is that head coach Troussier talks more than he does. Remember in the press conference before the first leg against Indonesia, Mr. Troussier said that his team had accumulated enough experience and practice. At the 2023 Asian Cup, although the Vietnamese team did not achieve the desired goal, it still had its own harvest. But when the match took place, all the accumulated experience that he talked about before the match was nowhere to be seen, only to see the Vietnamese team continue to concede goals just like the previous scenario against Indonesia. Specifically, the throw-in situation led to the only goal by Egy Maulana. However, when speaking at the press conference after the match, Mr. Troussier said that "we have practiced this situation over and over again...". Not knowing how to practice, but losing still lost...
Coach Troussier needs to change
Vietnamese football fans always love the national team passionately, love both the strength and the weakness. They can be in pain, then excited, bursting with joy. But the football that coach Troussier is applying has turned the Vietnamese team into something soulless, meaningless. Vietnamese football has changed too quickly in the past year, from falling from 94th to 105th (and soon to be 112th) on the FIFA rankings, to losing 9/10 recent matches, including 5 consecutive losses, losing every tournament. In the last 5 losing matches, the Vietnamese team only scored 5 goals, conceding 12 goals, a rapid decline. Losing can still be made up for by winning, but once losing faith and causing the enthusiasm of football fans to cool, it will take a long time to regain.
