The construction site of a key transport project in the last days of the year is very urgent. The workers are still working diligently day and night, even though the Tet atmosphere is near.
Couples working in the air control tower
The air traffic control tower is located in the center of Long Thanh airport project, next to the terminal and runway number 1 which is gradually being completed.
Engineer Nguyen Manh Hai (General Company 36, commander of the contractor consortium implementing 5 packages here) said that the air traffic control tower has completed the rough part with a height of over 107m (complete height of 123m according to design), 2 months ahead of schedule.
Other projects include primary and secondary radar stations and radio transmitting stations; radio receiving stations and dependent monitoring stations; meteorological radar stations; and multi-directional navigation stations, which have completed the rough construction and are estimated to be completed before April 30, 2025.
At 11am, the workers started their break. A few people were still finishing up unfinished work. Ms. Dinh Thi Tham, a common laborer, was busy mixing mortar and handing it to her husband, construction worker Nguyen Nhut Ho, who was on the upper floor.
They were working on the wall surrounding the technical building of the Air Traffic Control Tower. Both husband and wife were from Chau Thanh district, Soc Trang province. Wiping away the sweat, she smiled: "There is no joy in having a husband and wife."
There are also couples like Nguyen Thi Duy and Dinh Anh Dung. The husband is a construction worker, the wife is a construction worker, each couple follows their own path. Working under a contract system, each couple earns an average of 40 million VND/month, enough to raise their children and send money to their elderly mother in the countryside, with a little left over for old age.
Wear a hundred million bracelet to work as a construction worker
When asked what Ms. Tham wanted, she innocently said: "I work at the airport but have never been on a plane, so I just want to fly. The leaders said that if we do well, we will be rewarded with a trip by plane in the future, so we really like it."
Construction worker is hard work, covered in mud, but everyone is surprised to see the sparkling 18K gold cimen bracelets on Ms. Tham's hands. She smiles: "It's hard work, but it has to be beautiful. These 12 bracelets cost more than 100 million."
The workers here all live in dormitories at the construction site. Each dormitory can accommodate 8 people, has electricity and water, air conditioning, and a kitchen. Duy and her husband were born in 2001, the youngest couple in a room with 4 couples. The couples are all related, so they get along very well. Each couple cooks separately, then cooks together on their days off, which is an opportunity for each of them to contribute a dish.
Commander Nguyen Manh Hai said that the joint venture's packages are currently progressing well, so this Tet holiday, workers can return home comfortably without any pressure on progress. The workers are very happy, everyone is looking forward to returning home for Tet and they have already scheduled Tet gifts to bring home to their grandparents and parents.
Night on the highway construction site
Dong Nai is a major traffic construction site. Next to the Long Thanh airport project, the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway project is also bustling every day.
Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway has 3 component projects, of which component 1 and component 2 through Dong Nai are still facing difficulties with land filling and site clearance. In particular, component 3 through Ba Ria - Vung Tau is progressing well, reaching more than half of its output.
At night, when the mid-century moon was dimly visible in the fog, the entire construction site in Package 21, section through An Phuoc Commune, Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province (component project 1), was brightly lit by the lights of motor vehicles and the rumbling sound of machines, the ground vibrating.
The 16km long component project (the entire route is 55km) is divided into two packages, of which package 21 is more than 10km long. Engineer Tran Van Huyen of Lizen Joint Stock Company, Director of the Executive Board of the joint venture of contractors, said: "Tonight, Lizen contractor will roll the ground and spread crushed stone on the route."
At the night construction site, Mr. Huyen said that the joint venture contractor for package 21 is organizing 15 construction teams. By the end of 2024, Lizen will complete the first 2.2km of component project 1.
From the road roller, keeping an eye on the road while driving in harmony with the other vehicles in the formation, driver Nguyen Ngoc Tan said he has 5 years of experience as a main driver. He has worked on large projects such as Amata Bien Hoa Industrial Park and Amata Long Thanh. The driver's income is quite good: Working during office hours, the salary is about 13 - 14 million VND/month; overtime income is about 19 - 20 million VND/month.
At the base stone aggregate spreading site, skilled worker Tran Van Dong (from Thanh Hoa) said that he has been with Lizen for 4 years. Before joining this project, he worked on the Van Phong - Nha Trang expressway section.
"Last year, Lizen company sent a car to take me home for Tet, my wife and children were very happy. I work in Dong Nai, my wife is a worker in her hometown Thanh Hoa, we have 2 children. I know that being far away from home is very difficult for my wife and children, but the salary here is good, I can send money home," he confided.
Lizen Contractor has a dormitory at the construction site for workers, so they don’t have to rent a room outside. Mr. Ninh The Thuong, Deputy Director of the Project Management Board, also lives in this dormitory. He has 11 years of experience in the road and bridge construction industry and has worked on major highway projects.
"This job is hard but also has interesting things. When we complete a big project, looking back and seeing our contribution makes us very proud," he said.
As the night progressed, the fog became colder. Our drone flew high. Looking at the screen, everything was pitch black, except for a shimmering area of light on the construction site.
The main critical path of component 2 project - Long Thanh airport air traffic management works is the air traffic control tower. To date, the air traffic control tower has completed 100% of the rough construction, 2 months ahead of schedule.
Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway is nearly 55km long, with 4-6 lanes, total investment of 17,800 billion VND, expected to be completed and put into operation at the end of 2026.
