Setting up the Tet pole is a traditional custom of the Vietnamese people. The pole setting ceremony signals the beginning of a new year, usually on the 23rd of December, after the Kitchen Gods' Day, and when the pole is lowered, farmers go to the fields to plow on the 7th of January. The pole setting ceremony is an indispensable ritual during the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. When the pole is set up, it signals the official beginning of Tet.
The sacrificial team performs the sacrificial ritual at the pole erection site.
During the Vietnamese monarchies, the custom of raising the pole was brought to the Royal Palace and used as a custom and regulation of the royal court. When the pole raising ceremony was performed, it was to announce the arrival of the new year, the royal court would temporarily stop all activities and only focus on celebrating the New Year; at the same time, the pole raising ceremony also expressed the wish for national peace and prosperity, favorable weather, all things growing and developing, and the people being warm, prosperous and happy.

Releasing carp on the occasion of Ong Cong and Ong Tao Festival is not only a beautiful traditional cultural feature of our ancestors, but also demonstrates the humanity and harmony with nature of the Vietnamese people. The Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center performs the carp releasing ceremony in the inner city with the meaning of summarizing a year of activities with many successes and good results in the work of preserving and promoting the value of the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage and wishing the best things to come to the people and the land that was once the capital of the Ho Dynasty in history books.
The pole is erected at Nghi Mon Gate in the grounds of Ho Dynasty Citadel.
