There is still much room for Vietnamese OCOP products to go far.
On the morning of October 31, the “Exhibition of OCOP export products” – VIETNAM OCOPEX was held at Vinhomes Ocean Park 3 Urban Area, Hung Yen Province. This is the first time that the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance have jointly organized an Exhibition of OCOP export products – VIETNAM OCOPEX.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan highly appreciated the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance for accompanying and coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize this meaningful event.
Emphasizing the importance of Vietnamese agricultural products in general and OCOP products in particular, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development pointed out: Firstly, with the advantages and diverse potential of natural resources, climate and unique culture..., Vietnam is not only successful in exporting its strong agricultural products, but is also a country with many identities with specialties, products and traditional craft villages, carrying local cultural values, most clearly demonstrated by the image of Vietnamese OCOP products.

These are products that represent the value and quintessence of Vietnamese culture through each product story, which shows the aspirations and images of farmers associated with each Vietnamese countryside.
Second, after more than 6 years of implementation, Vietnam has had more than 14,000 OCOP products from nearly 8,000 entities. OCOP products have gradually approached the market, unleashing the potential and advantages of regions to develop the rural economy. However, this is also the time to change more strongly, affirming Vietnamese cultural values through each OCOP product to target the export market.
Third, this is an event that brings together typical OCOP products from more than 38 provinces and cities, with more than 250 booths of 230 enterprises and cooperatives, held in a very modern, luxurious and emotional location and space, helping OCOP subjects have emotions associated with new values, new environments and new challenges.
Overall, the OCOP Program has had positive and significant impacts on rural economic development, such as:
The OCOP program has contributed to changing the organization of production in rural areas towards linking value chains, unleashing the potential of land, products, and comparative advantages of localities;
The festival has the participation of more than 230 enterprises, cooperatives, and OCOP entities from 38 localities nationwide, displaying more than 460 OCOP products from 3 to 5 stars at 250 booths. Photo: Do Nga |
OCOP products meet quality and food safety standards and regulations; have diverse designs and packaging, are environmentally friendly, and meet market requirements.
The program contributes to creating more jobs, promoting livelihood development in particularly difficult areas and vulnerable groups such as ethnic minorities, women, etc.
The OCOP program helps entities to be proactive in market development, expanding distribution channels, and expanding production and business activities.
However, according to Minister Le Minh Hoan: "Besides those results, OCOP products still have a lot of room for development and many requirements that need to be completed, in order to reach further into the international market."
Businesses do not just sell products, they must sell the “story that creates the product”
According to Minister Le Minh Hoan, OCOP products are Vietnamese values and identity, and OCOP products need to compete with cultural values when approaching the market.
In particular, the head of the agricultural sector confided: “Today, consumers do not only buy products but also buy “the story that creates the product”, so the more special the story, the more different the price, the easier it is to communicate and promote the product to the market”.
Analyzing, Mr. Hoan said that the story needs to be built with different values of culture and indigenous knowledge, and must be shown on packaging and labels; the story not only creates emotions for consumers, but also enhances pride in the homeland and country. That must be the prerequisite and aspiration for the subjects to build and perfect OCOP products.
“OCOP entities need to prepare and be ready for integration. In addition to the requirements on standards, quality, food safety, commercial capacity and initiative, and requirements to participate in the distribution chain (branding, trademarks, logistics capacity, etc.), OCOP entities need to be flexible and creative in building and designing products. That is the story of packaging, packaging methods suitable for each customer segment and market requirements,” Minister Le Minh Hoan advised.
Besides, according to Minister Le Minh Hoan, OCOP entities need to change their thinking and commercial habits, which are prestige and responsibility towards partners and consumers.
“In order for the subjects to reach further, I suggest that trade agencies and Vietnamese embassies abroad increase information, promotion and trade connections for OCOP products, because it is not only an economic story, it is also the promotion and introduction of Vietnamese culture to the world,” said Minister Le Minh Hoan.

The head of the agricultural sector also emphasized that, with the role of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry will always accompany and support localities and businesses, especially always support new ideas and solutions, contributing to promoting consumption and increasing the value of Vietnamese OCOP products.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, VIETNAM OCOPEX is an opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises, cooperatives, and OCOP entities to introduce and promote their products, seek partners, and develop markets not only domestically but also internationally through opportunities to connect, exchange, and cooperate directly with trade promotion organizations, foreign enterprises, and importers. At the same time, OCOP entities also have the opportunity to exchange and learn about the strict requirements of the world market and study the possibility of expanding export scale.
VIETNAM OCOPEX will take place from October 31 to November 4, 2024 at Venice Area in Ocean Park 3 Urban Area, Hanoi with the participation of more than 230 enterprises, cooperatives, and OCOP entities from 38 localities across the country displaying more than 460 OCOP products from 3 stars to 5 stars at 250 booths. |
