A convoy of 'tiger' trucks from 7 mineral mines destroyed a road built by local people.

According to local residents, the road connecting Ha Dong and Ha Son communes (also known as Dong Son Road) is about 4km long. This road was built by local residents in 2008. However, for many years now, due to the large number of vehicles carrying dirt and rocks, the road surface has been severely damaged and degraded.

Mr. Duong Van Hinh (born in 1967, Thanh Mon village, Ha Dong commune) said that the Dong Son road was built by people from the two communes contributing 400,000 VND/person. The road surface is asphalt, but in the past 3 years, many trucks (Howo type) continuously carrying soil and rocks have "plowed" this entire road.

“In Ha Son commune, there are 4 active quarries, in Ha Dong commune, there are 3 quarries (2 quarries, 1 quarry), all vehicles go to Dong Son road. Every day, hundreds of trucks pass through this road, causing damage to the road surface, with many potholes. In the rainy season, this place is muddy, in the dry season, the dust is so thick that people passing through this road are miserable,” Mr. Hinh said indignantly.

According to Mr. Hinh, not only is the road damaged, but the trucks racing each other are also causing traffic accidents. People’s trees and crops cannot grow because of the thick layer of dust that sticks to the leaves.

According to residents of Kim Son village, last year they had to use barrels, rocks, wood, etc. to block vehicles. After that, mining companies spent nearly one billion VND to repave the road for the people, about 1km.

A leader of Ha Dong commune confirmed that in 2006, people from Ha Dong and Ha Son communes contributed 400,000 VND/person to build this road. After the mineral mines came into operation, the road was damaged, and the enterprise (mine owner) supported money for repairs. However, since last year, the number of trucks carrying soil has increased, causing the road to continue to be seriously damaged.

“In addition to the 7 mines currently in operation, Thanh Hoa province has also approved the policy for 3 land mines (1 mine in Ha Dong commune and 2 mines in Ha Son commune). If all 3 of these land mines come into operation, there will be a total of 10 mineral mines here, so this route is no different from a large construction site,” a commune leader shared.

Speaking to VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dung, Vice Chairman of Ha Trung District People's Committee, said that through meetings, voters have also reported on this issue. The district has directed mineral exploitation units to overcome the above situation. The units have also promised to repair the damaged road section. However, the units said that they are facing difficulties so they have not been able to implement it and promised to fix it soon.

“The district has reported this issue to the province, and we are also proposing capital to repair and upgrade this road. At that time, if the road is damaged, the mining units must commit to repairing it,” said Mr. Dung.
