French President Emmanuel Macron is set to hold high-level talks with his US counterpart Donald Trump amid heightened tensions over negotiations over the three-year conflict.
French Minister of European Affairs Benjamin Haddad confirmed the information today, February 20.
The French leader's visit comes as the Trump administration wades into direct talks with Russia, a move that has raised concerns among European allies.
Speaking to French television station LCI , Minister Haddad said that President Macron came to Washington to “represent the voice of Europeans and affirm that the future of Ukraine cannot be decided without them.”
The White House chief hinted at the visit a day earlier, telling reporters that Mr Macron would arrive “very soon, probably Monday”.
Thus, the two Presidents will meet again not long after their previous meeting in December last year at the Elysee Palace, together with the three-way discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The conflict in Ukraine will be a major focus of talks in Washington, especially as the US has initiated direct diplomatic engagement with Moscow.
On February 18, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia, agreeing to hold further talks on Ukraine without the participation of Kiev or European countries.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also plans to visit the White House next week, according to US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz in an interview with Fox News.
The purpose of the meetings organized by the Trump administration is to broker a solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Tensions between Washington and Kiev continued to rise when Mr. Trump on February 19 called his counterpart Zelensky "an unelected dictator".
