Worried that their children will be "hugging" phones and computers during the summer vacation, many parents have a "headache" planning to find places for their children to study culture, summer skill camps, learn English...
The first week of summer vacation, I asked her to… open a class at home.
This is the situation of many urban families who do not have the conditions to leave their children with grandparents or send their children to the countryside to play. Ms. Nguyen Thanh Mai, whose child is studying at primary school in Hai Duong city (Hai Duong province), said that after the parent meeting ended the school year, the representative of the class's parent committee proposed that the teacher organize a class group in the first week of the children's summer vacation.
According to Ms. Mai, many parents also agree because they do not want to waste time asking and finding a place to leave their children during the 3 summer months.
Ms. Mai Thi Diem (in Da Nang City) started looking for summer courses for her child before the school year ended. Ms. Diem said that because she was worried that her child would be "addicted" to games, she created a tight schedule with extra foreign language and math courses.
Half the day, her child studies English and Math with a tutor, the other half she participates in experiential courses. In addition, Ms. Diem also arranges swimming lessons for her child in the early mornings... to ensure that her child has little free time at home.
Understanding the needs of parents, international summer camp programs, military summer camps, English summer camps, life skills summer camps, sex education summer camps, experiential summer camps and temple retreats... have been opened. Participation time can range from a week to a month, with costs ranging from several million to hundreds of millions of VND.
However, the explosion of summer camp models has also brought with it quality issues. Not all summer camps meet parents’ expectations. Many programs promise to bring great experiences to children but in reality, they do not meet expectations.
Recently, there have been warnings about scams impersonating military summer camps. In Da Nang City, some schools have sent urgent notices to parents to be alert to fraud related to summer skills camp registration.
In Hanoi, the city police also warned people to be wary of online registration invitations as parents were scammed out of several billion dong for similar courses for their children.
How to have a real summer vacation?
Regarding the debate on how to properly take a summer vacation, Dr. Tran Van Phuc (Xanh Pon General Hospital, Hanoi) said that there are many opinions on how students should take a summer vacation. However, it is necessary to avoid extremes that are too left-wing (relaxing, completely relaxing for the entire 3 summer months) or too right-wing (tightening study time, no time to relax, rest) for children during the entire summer.
"I think that children have worked hard to learn knowledge for 9 months during the school year, and during the 3 summer months, they need to participate in experiential activities to learn social skills through play," shared Dr. Tran Van Phuc.
To ensure students have a safe summer vacation, schools are actively coordinating with relevant agencies to organize courses on drowning prevention and fire prevention skills. Mr. Nguyen Manh Trinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Long Bien District (Hanoi), said that drowning prevention and fire prevention and fighting skills are two extremely important skills that schools need to provide to students, especially during the summer vacation and hot weather.
Therefore, this district has developed a special topic to deploy to schools in the area right from the first days of summer vacation.
On May 30, 2024, the People's Committee of Dong Da District (Hanoi) also organized the "Launching Ceremony for the whole population to practice swimming to prevent drowning in 2024" and opened free swimming classes for children from poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households in the district.
This activity aims to raise awareness of the role and responsibility of all levels, sectors, families and the whole society in drowning prevention, while developing the swimming movement, creating a healthy and useful playground, teaching children how to swim, and preventing drowning, especially during the summer vacation.
