The answer of the Ministry of Education and Training is B.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên03/07/2023

The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the answers for 8 multiple-choice subjects of the 2023 high school graduation exam, including 7 foreign languages: English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean.

It is worth noting that although the English exam has controversial questions, some of which are said to have 2 possible answers, the Ministry of Education and Training's answer only selects one correct answer. In particular, the answer that the ministry did not choose (of the 2 controversial answers) is said to have the more obvious error. See the full answer here.

Controversial English exam question

Specifically, for question 46, code 402, the test requires candidates to mark options A, B, C, D on the answer sheet to indicate the underlined part that needs to be corrected:

"Their emerging (A) research shows that the learning motivation of the two groups of learners was quite distinctive (B) from each other, and the compared (C) group whose learning motivation was stronger performed better than the control (D) group".

(Their pioneering research showed that the learning motivations of the two groups of learners were quite different from each other, and the experimental group, with those who were more strongly motivated to learn, achieved better learning results than the control group.)

The underlined words include (the words in parentheses are the Vietnamese meanings understood in the context of the question): A, pioneering; B, distinctive; C, comparative; D: control.

According to the English exam answers just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, the correct answer for question 46, code 402 is B, which means the word that needs to be corrected in the quoted sentence is distinctive. With this answer, if the student answers C (the word that needs to be corrected is comparative), then there will be no points.

As Thanh Nien Newspaper has reported, in recent days, English teachers have been arguing about which option is the correct answer to the above question. The general consensus is that both options B and C are correct.

In particular, with option C, the error is more easily visible.

According to Mr. Pham Gia Bao, an English teacher specializing in IELTS preparation at 583 Bach Dang Street (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi), when correcting questions for students, at first he and the students chose answer C "comparative" (should be written as comparison), because the misspelled word was more obvious. But reading carefully, he discovered that option B, distinctive, is also a misspelled word (should be written as distinct).

Mr. Bao believes that the English proficiency of the test maker should not be judged based on a single error in a test question. It is inevitable that test questions sometimes have some errors. The problem is that the Ministry of Education and Training needs to have an appropriate solution to ensure the rights of candidates.

However, with the answer just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, this request has not been met by the Ministry of Education and Training.
